I have been looking for this model for some time, I understand it's discontinued. My local gunshop called me to say they had traded for one in 95% shape. All original sights no mods. Asking $399. Is this a piece worth this or is $300 the ceiling if it checks out?
Also as I have nerer owned a lever other than my Daisey, what would this board recommend for sights to use for a 60yr shooter with trifocals?

Sorry I should have mentioned this is a short range brush gun, hogs, black bear etc.

It'll take a trip to the gunsmith, but I suggest a 2X pistol scope mounted in the scout position out on the barrel. It'll be plenty fast in the brush, still makes for a comfortable carry at the balance point. I've gone to this with my 59 year old eyes after having used a peep all my life...

Have you tried a miniature red dot sight like the Docter ? Hard to beat at close range even on running critters. You aim with both eyes open, works in any light condition (no adjustement) and is OK up to 100 paces and more.

Well I bought the gun, was like brand new. Trigger is a tad heavy but crisp, and no creep. I will leave it alone for now. To mount a scope, or a "doctor red dot" on the barrel you are probably using the dove tail for the existing rear site, for the "doctor" what kind of mounts do you use?
Any one use a Holosight?

have a 1894 in .44 that I set up with a ultradot red dot scope and another lever with a aimpoint. I use two warne bases with ultradot and one with aimpoint(uses a single ring to mount). Great setup for short range. Going to probably switch the ultradot with a nikon vsd from my shotgun that I never use. The VSd has a 1moa size dot and the aimpoint has a 2 moa dot. The ultradot has 4 or 5 moa and at anything over 50 yds it really starts to lose its edge. Make sure you check the dot size on whatever sight you purchase. Some of them are reallly meant for close in tactical work or pistol fire and have 6 to 7 moa dots or even larger. With a hunting rifle that may be used up to 100 yds(in my area), accuracy from such dots becomes a little harder to attain. Don't recomend the big moa dots for anything over 50yds. They start to cover the entire deer at higher ranges, thus the reason why I am switching to the smaller sized red dots. They are deadly at close range. Literally takes only about 1-2 seconds to raise your gun, target and fire, about the same time it takes just to get a deer in the field of view of a scoped rifle. I'm cross eye dominant and the lack of magnification really helps me out in getting the rifle on target quickly with one eye as its right where you thought it was. Hope it helps.

I have a 2x Nikon on a pistol works fine, but I feel I need a larger tube than 20, thats why I am leaning to red dots or halo's or what ever they call them. I want fast aquistion of the target at ranges 40-60 tds in brush.

I put a Williams receiver sight on my 1894P. Try the Speer 270 grain Gold Dot soft point over 19.8 grains of 296. This load will stay under 2" at 50 yards in my rifle.

another vote for reciever sights a good peep looks right on them and just plain works!

The tech staff at Brownells said I might have to add a new front sight, but it wasn't needed. There is plenty of adjustment with the factory front ramp. The load I'm using is a 270 grain Speer Gold Dot soft point over 19.8 grains of 296 for about 1500 fps. I've always been a fan of peep sights. It's fast and very accurate, especially under 100 yards.
