S&W 29-3 with Sillhouette Sights - What can I do?
« on: February 01, 2010, 05:55:40 AM »
I have a S&W 29-3, 44 Mag, 10" barrel and the factory 4 way adjustable silhouette sights.  My eyes are not what they used to be.  I would like to keep it factory so no milling, drilling, tapping and I am slightly against painting.  Is there any company that makes a drop in fiber optic for the front sight?  I already emailed HiViz and they do not have anything.  Any ideas would be great.  Attached is the front sight style I found online

Hello
The revolver you show was called The Target Champion due to it's 4 Position front sight. They also made them in the Model 586 in .357 Magnum caliber of which I have one. There is a company called SDM in Ohio that makes all the current S&W Factory old Bead front sights and Fiber optic front sights  as well. Below is a link to the web site and if you Call Scott he will tell you how to eliminate your problem with modifications. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

The one pictured is one I found since I was just too lazy to pull mine out of the safe.  I have the 44 mag with the same exact sight system, I will check that link out and hopefully they can help, Thanks.

Talked to Scott and he doesn't think he has anything that would work.  I looked at the front sight the other day and it looks like one piece.  He if it is a standard S&W pinned sight, he would have something but I don't believe it is.

Gun in picture appears to be either nickel or stainless and 6" range of barrel length? I've never seen such a combination before? And not sure the 29-3 had a full underlug either? Or is your illustration just to show the sight?

That front sight was used on several guns by S&W. I've owned three different guns all of different configurations with it. The first was a 6" or perhaps 6.5" Model 29 with full underlug. To my knowledge that was S&W's first use of it as I got it long before I saw the others.

I had one of the 10-5/8" guns and used it in competition both formal and informal as well as hunting all over the country. Letting it go is one of my saddest regrets of guns I've let go.

The other was an 8-3/8" S&W 686 which I named "ol silver" about the only gun I've ever named. With it too I won many matches and brought home lots of trophies. I am not certain but believe it was also offered with that sight as a 6" in addition to the 8-3/8" I had. Most likely that is what is pictured in this thread.

As to  your question on it. The front sight is totally different than anything else S&W has ever used and it is in no way interchangable with any other. I do not recall at the moment how the base of the front sight is held in place but if you remeove the leaf and adjustment you are left with a U shaped channel it all fit into. You could have the barrel cut and a new front sight installed but I think that would be a crying shame.

If you don't want to use it for what it is I would suggest you let someone who can and will appreciate it have the gun and use the funds to get one more suited to your needs.

The picture is just a illustration of what mine is.  I love the gun and just wanted a sight so I could use it hunting.  I can hit targets all day with it, but I wanted something with a faster acquisition and brighter in low light.  Guess I am stuck.  Thanks.

Hello
Feel Free to use my Picture if it will help. I Think he will be able to remove your existing sight Blade and replace it with one of his Gold Post Patridge style Blades that he offeres seperate. It is evident that my existing Patridge Post sight blade is NOT part of the rest of The sight assembly... But, he will have to use the rest of your sight base that is currently on your gun..Hammerdown
