Converting S&W DAO to SA/DA
« on: January 31, 2010, 04:26:14 AM »
Gentlemen,
Police trade-in Model 15's are available now at attractive prices. They have been converted to DAO but retain the hammer spur. My question is, can you convert them back to SA/DA by changing out the hammer? How difficult would this be? If the job requires a gunsmith, I think I would just shop around for an unmodified one.

What do you think, is it worth the trouble?

Hello LT
I have changed many Hammers in S&W K-Frames through the years and found all Post War Hammers to Just drop in and work fine. I have heard from others that this requires a Gun Smith for fitting of the new part, but never needed to see one when changing out hammers or triggers. If you do the Job your self just make sure it does not Push off in the cocked position, and if it does not, You should be Golden with the change... Hammerdown

I concur with hammerdown, I have found that the hammer is a drop in on the K frames I have done, just over a half dozen.  That's not to say that all of them well be a drop in, check for push off.

I concur just replace the hammer and possibly the trigger to get back to both type of actions.

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like it would be do-able. I came across an un-modified one in a local pawn shop for not much more than the cost of the used DAO plus the shipping and FFL handling fee. If negotiations go well with the pawn shop, I'll probably buy local.

Thanks again.
