A few 1911 questions
« on: November 04, 2003, 08:29:34 AM »
After hunting and shooting for 25+ years, I just bought my first 1911 pistol... a Springfield Armory 1911 in .38 Super.  I always wanted a Colt Combat commander, but after seeing what those go for on the used market, I felt compelled to buy the full size.
Anyway, I have a few questions re: 1911 models.  I know that they make .22 cal conversion units for the .45's.  Would it be possible to convert this full size 1911 to a commander sized model (in .38 Super) by getting a shorter barrel, slide, ect?  If so, what other "parts" would have to be exchanged as well?  Thanks in advance.

I think your best bet is to shoot the one you've got until you can afford to buy what you really wanted in the first place.  You may be able to make such a conversion, but you'll end up replacing almost everything except the serial number to do it.  A good place to start is the Brownell's gunsmithing catalog.

Sorry, the length of the full size frame is greater than the commander length too. You can buy a frame/slide/barrel, and all the internals from Brownells and build you one if you want. It'll cost more than the price of a new commander size Springfield though----------

I was just thinking the same thing years ago their was a kit to do this from COLT on the 45 acp to shoot the 22lr.  I would like to have a full size shooter too.                                                   BigBill

If i remember correctly the kit came with the slide, barrel/bushing and softer recoil spring.  I wish they made a kit for the new .17 caliber??

BigBill,
Ceiner makes a 22 conversion for the full size and commander size 1911s for about $200. I have one for my full size Kimber and it has been flawless. It has been at least as accurate as a factory sighted 22/45 I have. Lots of fun!

The Commander has a shorter dust cover over the recoil spring, and the feature the recoil spring sets against ahead of the link, is further to the rear.  That makes the frame non-compatible with the two different slide lengths.  As far as 22 conversions, they will fit any full size 1911 frame.

Flint,
You are indeed correct on the dust cover length difference between the full size and commander. Ciener makes a 22 conversion for the full size and another for the commander.
