Encore////22 Rimfire...
« on: January 30, 2010, 09:19:23 AM »
First of all, is there a 22 rimfire barrel available for the Encore?

And if so, how do you change the firing pin from center fire to rimfire?

It sure isn’t the same as the Contenders that I have…

Thanks…BCB

I have a stainless .22lr for my encore.  You don't have to change anything, I believe the barrel is offset to compensate.  The rimfire barrel does use a different scope base than the normal encore barrel though.  I put a 4x on mine and it is very accurate.  At 40 yards you can keep all rounds of cheap winchester bulk ammo inside a nickel.

silly goose,

I wondered about the barrel being offset, but I really can't visualize that!!!

But, if it uses the same firing pin as centerfire, then there must be something to what you said...

At least I know a rimfire barrel can be put on an Encore...

Thanks...BCB

T/C uses an off-set chamber, that way they can utilize the centerfire firing pin (see picture).  Also the barrel requires a special scope mount, have heard of problems with getting scopes sighted in.

I had MGM build me a 14inch barrel a couple of years ago and purchased a "Rim-Fire Conversion" for my Encore. Takes about 2-3 minutes to change them out. That way my barrel has a chamber that is centered and no problems with mounting a scope.

Here's a picture of the conversion kit vs the factory firing pin

Here's a photo of my MGM barrel

It doesn't use the standard Encore mount, you would have to order the one for the rimfire barrel, I forget the model #.  It really wasn't a big deal, I think that mount was like $22 w/shipping, added a 4x simmons and had no trouble w/sighting in.  So far I have only used Winchester bulk ammo, and just today shot a 3 shot 7/8" group at 149', I know a foot shy of 50 yards, but I'm honest.  I have been having a ton of fun w/this barrel.

silly goose,

Does that ‘scope mount parallel with the bore or parallel with the barrel?

If it is like a side mount on a Model 94 Winchester, the bullet crosses the line of site left to right as some point in its travel…

I don’t think this would really matter the 22 rimfire probably isn’t going to be shot at great distances, but I am just curious…

By the way, I am getting groups very similar to the ones you are shooting.  I am using the Contender barrel though...

Thanks...BCB

No, its not a side mount, the only difference is the rimfire barrel has a flat top as opposed to being rounded like the other Encore barrels.  If you look at the pic a couple posts up, I believe by doc, you can see that the mount is incorrect for the rimfire barrel, and is probably the mount for a regular Encore barrel.  I'm thinking the barrel being offset is of minor consequence, at least in my experience, I don't think I've had such accuracy w/rifles.  I couldn't be happier with it.  I haven't had the opportunity to try "good ammo" in it yet, and really don't have a reason to at this point.

The correct scope mount for the rimfires is part # 9862 in silver or # 9864 in blued.

Also, in case you didn't know, never ever dry fire an encore rimfire barrel.  It will peen the chamber and require repair before you can chamber rounds again.

Now that was something I didn't know.  I dry fire my single actions all the time, but for some reason I'm hesitant to do so w/the T/C's and haven't been able to bring myself to.
