Stabilized wood grip set!
« on: January 28, 2010, 03:05:15 PM »
I made this set from stabilized Black Fire Spalted Maple. Spalted Maple by nature is soft and weak, ok for a low recoil pistol if not to soft. I sent some wood to WSSI to have stabilized. This process makes the wood almost like plastic. Water nor even acid is suppose the effect it after this process. One big drawback is after the process the wood is about 2 to 3 times heavier than before. The wood dosent even need a finish applied. After shaping and sanding all you do is buff it to a shine.

Before buffing it looks like this.

After buffing it looks like this.

Good Lord, that is beautiful.

What would something like that run set up for a hanger bar and a Contender?

Wow.

David, I imagine they impregnate the wood with a plastic(I saw some of this when in forestry school in a  wood tech. course). The Germans did it during WW2(wooden bearings impregnated with lead for Rommel's desert troops). It sure has character. Call it a camo finish.  Pat

That, to my eyes, is the sweetest looking grip and forearm ever bolted to a TC.  Nice that just a sanding and buffing will make it pop.

Thank you Sir! I really like it. But this stuff is tuff to work. Trying to sand all the scratches out after ruff shaping is a real pain. And the dust is a real killer. The resin its impregnated with puts off a foul odor while working.
