Savage Model 23
« on: January 27, 2010, 12:49:47 AM »

Hi folks

I just bought a Savage Model 23C in .32-20 that I intend to use as my waling around rifle. I was wondering if anyone here shoots a Model 23 and has any experience to share.

You've got a good one if it's in good shape.  As a kid growing up that model, in 25-20, was what my brothers and I used to hunt deer with.  My dad won it in a raffle, along with a couple of boxes of ammo.  We learned to shoot with that rifle, and one of my brothers still has it.  The 32-20 and 25-20 both take the same magazine. You can find a spare around, usually at gun shows, but they won't come cheap.  The 32-20, with a cast bullet, should be fine and dandy for a walking around rifle.  Cheap to load for, too.

I have a nice one in .25-20. I really do enjoy shooting it. The bore is mint and it came with a receiver sight. The top one in the pic is the Savage. All in the pic are .25-20s.

Sluice, I used to have a 23 in 32/20,  was a good shooter but somehow let it get away.  I still have a Colt revolver and 2 Win 92s in 32/20- though. All good shooters with Lyman 311316 and 10 grs. 2400.  I think you'll like it.

I had the 25-20 and 32-20 and even though the 32 had a little throat pitting, it shot extremely well with open sights and cast loads. I replaced both of them with Marlin 1894CL's.

The 23's are great little rifles!!  I LOVE the one piece design of the barrel action...  The damn mags are worth more than the guns them selves!!!!

I have had them all, from the 23a in 22RF and the "d" hornet to the "b" in 25 and "c" 32 20's!! GREAT FUN GUNS!!  Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine!!
I bought my first savage some twenty five years ago. it was a model "B" from a small inner city gun shop. It cost me 65 Bucks and it came with a paper bag full of ammo!!!! It was drilled for a side mount scope and its stock carved up making it worth little mopre than its purchace price. but MAN did it shoot!!!
