10" Octagon 45 Colt Barrel ???
« on: January 25, 2010, 01:38:39 PM »
My buddy just purchased a LNIB 10" octagon barrel in 45 Colt for his Contender from what the seller said it was his father's and it had only been fired a few times with light loads then put away..

The question is... are these barrels safe/capable of handling top Contender/Ruger 45 Colt loads?

Yes. No problem at all. Use good brass.

I have one of these and with a heavy bullet and stout load the recoil is impressive to say the least.   ;D  I replaced the stock grip with a Pachmyer Decelerator grip and that did help reduce the felt recoil.

A Decelerator grip came with the barrel.

My buddy is new to 45 Colts but I have been shooting them for years in Bisley Vaquero's and SRH's so can now hardly wait to give his a try with my loads.

Thanks for the info...

I can see why people come over and look at that gun very nice...

Well we got out to the club yesterday with the 10" octagon 45 Colt barrel installed started with some 200gr Cowboy loads and moved up to 300gr XTP's and then 325gr home made hard cast GC's...

WOW does this little gun recoil with those top loads...

Chronied the 325's @ 1390fps to 1403fps with my brand new first time to the range Beta model Shooting Chrony then I started getting error readings turns out one of us shot the rear of the chrony I say it was my buddy and he says it was me................ :-\

My last shooting Chrony that I had traded in for this new one had never been shot in almost 20 years of using it and this one was the first trip to the range...    ::)

Did I say this little handcannon really recoils and I am used to shooting the very top 454 Casull loads in my 4.25" Ruger SRH...

I warned you that the recoil would be "impressive".  I know folks are always surprised when they shoot mine.  I've been tempted to replace it with a bull barrel but it makes such a nice "walking around" gun.  All my other barrels are Super 14, bulls.

Recoil was definitely more than I was expecting but still manageable I did put a glove on after the first 5 or so shots and I agree it would be a very light packing gun just can't do that up here in Canada.

I am thinking I want to try some 240gr HP's in this gun if we are getting 1400fps with 300's it should be able to get 1600fps with the lighter bullets.

I ordered a 14" bull barrel in 45 Colt for myself from MGM, in Canada you can hunt with a rifle with a barrel 12" as long as the overall length of the firearms is min 26 1/2" so I will be putting the factory rynite stock/fore end on for a light weight thumper/plinker.
