New barrel fitting experience
« on: January 25, 2010, 10:59:47 AM »
Recently bought a used 45-70 barrel on the classified.  As luck would have it, would not fit my current frames (which are, so far, interchangeable).  So, I re-read the barrel fitting tips about 6 times and went looking for my shoebox labeled 'abrasives' - containing everything from crocus cloth to valve grinding compound.  Not to be found.  No files the right size either.  Darn, I scheduled Sat AM for this task and had a busy weekend in store.

Then I noticed my Dremel box.  Hmmm . . .  A quick check with the dial caliper showed the smaller sanding drum's diameter with a very fine grit was .348 (only 27 thousandths smaller than hinge pin at 0.375).  ::)  So I set to work using a permanent black marker to 'smoke' the lug and wearing a 2X Optivisor (maybe the greatest 'tool' I ever bought).

The Dremel removes a lot of metal quick even at slowest speed, especially with the relatively soft steel on the Handi lugs.  I took it slow using the flexible shaft.  Probably did the 'smoke & grind' at least 15 times before I got close. Then I switched to a similar diameter felt wheel charged with emery to finish up.

Mission accomplished.

After checking the price of factory 45-70 ammo, I ordered dies, cases and bullets.  They should arrive tomorrow.
