223 at range first time.

Been doing alot of reading here and decided to try a Handi 223. First time at the range today. I was pretty impressed with how well the rifle shot an accuracy. It is a blued standard barrel 22" with the brown stock bought from wally world with scope on it. Changed the scope to a tasco 3x9 I had. Shoot remington 45gr hollow points white box from wally world. Cleaned the barrel an put a plastic washer between forearm screw an forearm. 3 shoots zeroed in at 25yds, then 3 shoots 25yds to see accuracy. Little bigger than a quarter I was happy. Moved the target to 100 yds, 2 shoots 3" high 1/2" apart. Change scope setting shoot 3 shots 1 1/2" high an holes touching each other. This little rifle really impressed me with its accuracy. I think it is a keeper.

Just bought the same gun, please give me the dimensions of that magic plastic washer.  Better yet, sell me the washer.

No matter what plans I have to spend some money on other rifles, there is a heavy barrel camo 223 Handi at Dick's that calls my name everytime I visit the lodge...$299 with scope, but I am waiting for their usual sale where they are $249. Nice little report you gave. In the future you will have to write some data on the targets, otherwise the Range Report police will be onto you. Welcome.

Did you polish and clean the barrel 326 strokes between shots,
or just let the lead fly? ;D

Patched the barrel with Hoppe's #9 an Kroil. Dry patched it an set for week. 20 rounds down the tube at the range, bring home an clean. Barrel never even got warm, was at the range 40 degrees out, bright sunny day, slight breeze an me by myself with a big grin.

20 shoots, 326 strokes per shot = 6,520 total strokes at the range and the barrel didn't get hot.  Must  have been 40 below.

Well, RA51, sounds like you got a keeper.  My .223 Handi, same as yours, is yet to turn in a really good showing at the range.  Reading your results gives me the urge to give it another try.  Clean the bore yet again, check the neoprene o-ring I installed similar to the nylon washer you use . . . hmmm -- a hard washer will tighten up more consistently than a soft neoprene o-ring -- you are on to something there, I think.  Down to the man-cave to root thru the washer collection . . .

I put a laminated stock an forearm on mine today, looks good. But the forearm fitment was not to my liking. The brown set will have to do as they fit up much better. I could see were a poor forearm fitment may through the accuracy off.

Tim indicates that the forearm should be torqued to 25ft/lb. You can only do that with a torque screwdriver which I will be investing in soon myself. I think the model Tim recommends is in the FAQs.

Also, how about NOT cleaning the guns! Seriously. Many Handis like dirty barrels according to umpteen gazillion posts here. Leave the cleaning kit at home. Put a few hundred rounds through it without cleaning and report # rounds when accuracy started to get better, # rounds when accuracy was at its best, and # rounds when the accuracy started to wain. Good luck... ;D

I don't think the specific torque is that important, snug is what most describe proper to be,  it just needs to be the same each time the forend is reinstalled, 25 inch/lbs is what I use.   ;)

I have the same gun, new with a total of 39 rounds through.  Shooting without barrel cleaning is music to my ears.  Will start the "no cleaning" breakin program soon and keep notes to see what happens.  

RA51, is your Tasco a new (chinese) or older (japanese) scope?

The tasco scope is probably a china made. In november I bought a remington 700 243 adl new an this tasco scope came with the rifle. It is a cheap scope but is clear, so it does what I need for now. The handi has only had 20 rounds thru it so far.
Just got rcbs reloading dies yesterday so it should be inexpensive to shot. Waiting on some bullets to arrive an make up my mind on which powder to use.

Went to the range today. Did not shot alot as lot of people there.
Rifle shoots good just I was not on it today 43yd an 100yds.
Talked to a gentleman an he recommended Ramshot TAC powder for the 223. He was shooting AR 223 rifle with a chonograph 3097fps at 3 feet from muzzle. 25gr. TAC with a 50gr. sierra fmj. Anyone shoot Ramshot TAC ?

I shoot IMR 3031. 24.4 grains or 25.4 grains. Will have to check my notes. I only shoot 55 grain bullets.

RA51,

Me again.  I just started reloading the 223 REM and am using Ramshot TAC.   I chose this powder because the nearest gunshop to my house carries it.  Load still in development but to date have tried the following in both my Kids AR15 and my handi 223.

OAL 2.22
Taper Crimp (switching to lee factory crimp soon as the die arrives)
TAC 22.8 to 25.9 grains
Hornandy FMJ-BT 55 grain (cheapest bulk .224 bullet @ Grafs)
Rem Small Rifle Primers
Using once fired military and commerical brass.  3/4 neck size only.

All loads cycle the AR15 just fine.  Not sure on the accuracy as my wife took the gun to bust clay pidgeons sitting on the 100 yard backstop.  She report one shot, one pidgeon for a 20 round mag.

Have shot 19 rounds through a brand new H&R 223, 22" standard barrel.  Powder in the 24.0 to 24.5 seems to work best but this is very prelimary.  Got approx. 1" group on 3 of the 6 powder charges I have tried.

No signs of overpressure on any of the loads.  Ramshot does not publish data for this bullet, they do list 26.0 grains as max for a 55 grn Blitz king.

Let me know if you try this powder and how it work.
