45-120 barrel fit to action
« on: January 25, 2010, 06:44:06 AM »
I spent some time yesterday doing the final fitting of my 45-120 barrel to it's new action.  It's done, I'm real happy, and now all I have to do is work up an Express load using the 350 gr. Hornady.  I'll be conservative and use .458 Win Mag velocities with that bullet as a goal...   ::)  I'm thinking 24-2500 fps here.  Should be a nice light deer/bear load.... ;D

Oh!   :o  Speaking of bear!  I need to come up with a 2100 - 2200 fps load with those 500 gr. hard cast RNFPGC's I have!   ;D  They should be just the ticket if I go on that bear hunt this fall!   8)

Of course I still need to refinish the furniture, but new walnut or laminated Monte Carlo wood from our sponsor Gunstocks, Inc. is lookin pretty good!   ;)  We'll see,  :-\  Load development comes first!   :P

The next time I go to Civil War re-enactment I am going to buy you a cannon! then you may be satisfied with both recoil and killing power!

Congratulations on the new package. Sounds like it deserves new furniture.

I'm interested in seeing your report and chrono velocities. :)

I haven't shot mine in a while, I need to get some harder casting metal so I can cast some high speed bullets!

I know what you're talking about Tyler.  After seeing seeing what your "possum load" did to those deer this year I think the thin jacketed 405 is just to frangable a bullet to use for hunting...  :-\  We definately need to find something more substantial for our, uh... normal velocities.   I'm thinkin 500 gr. Dead Toughs here!  ;D

get a few of these and some fast burning powder:   ;D

Hummmmm,   :-\  What dem is?  Remember though Joe, I don't like no sub caliber bullet that got to get all dressed up in plastic to take a trip down a bore!   ::)

'spose they might do for them Montana PD's though.  If they hold together at 3K that is...   :D

I ain't in a hurry.  Would like to get the shadow box done before I die...so I'm not in a hurry.  ;D  Leave it for the grandkids and such, along with the crosscut saw and 44 from my grandpa, the bible from my other grandpa, the 12 ga. from great grandpa, etc.

Check with Veral on the cast bullet forum, he is a wealth of knowledge on large projectiles, also might ask the boys on the cannon forum, after all they launch 16lb bowling balls from their mortars (only a modicum larger than your bullets) ;D

AtlLaw...I shot a deer with the 405's this year, did you see what they did?  There was an exit.

Hey Ty!

I went back and looked at that post 'cause as I remember it your load was a:

"405 grain FP over XX* grains IMR4320 for 2550 fps in the 45-120."

and it did a number on that deer!   ;D  Reminds me of what it did to that 'possum!   :D

Unfortunately your pictures no longer come up but from what you said:

"I shot this doe with my 45-120, she was on very steep hill above me.  Entrance was about tennis ball sized, exit is...well, really big.    Only got one pic before I had to clean her.  Despite the wound we got most of the meat off the front end since I pretty much centered her.  She did not go anywhere after the shot."

confirms my thought that the 405's are just to lightly constructed for even medium game.   8)  That's why I kept them down to around 2K fps for this year's deer season.  Probably a good varmit bullet though...  ;D

That's also why I figured the Hornady 350, made for the .458 WM, ought to be about right for deer/bear...  :-\  Maybe even up to 2600 fps...  ::)  Only one way to find out!   :D

Guys I think y'all are awesome. I don't have the guts or the deer for that matter to try out stuff like that. Maybe one day when I have paid my dues to my job and school I will have time to find a caliber I absolutely love and try out all the assortments you guys have come up with! Right now I am to interested in the deer I kill having some meat left on them to shoot them with a 10000 Nitro Express with a 4 lb bullet over 1 lb of 4198!!!! LOL ;D ;D ;D ;D

Have a great day
