Sights for the 357 bbl
« on: January 25, 2010, 04:38:31 AM »
I noticed that the extra bbls in 357 and 44 don't have sights. Anyone have an idea on sights to put on or have done this?
I think the pistol cal bbls would do better with open sights.

A lot of the bolt action sporting rifles used to come with open sights. People pretty much ignored them and put on scopes. For a long time now most have not had open sights. H&R decided to not go to the extra expense and trouble to put them on because(?) most people will just put on scopes anyway. Good sights installed at the factory level during assembly will add at least $50 to the cost of the rifle. The customer demographic for price structure probably does not justify this.
I agree that yours is a good idea. The Williams WGOS and Shorty Ramp front c/w bead would make a nice contemporary set up. Something a little more basic would be along the lines of the TC Hawkin adj. rear with a stout front blade, but the frt height would probably need to be 'gut hook' high to work.
It would be nice (do they do this for nice or for profit?) if when sending in for the assessory barrel program that they would offer the addition of sights at a reasonable cost.
But then, I remember the days when you could order a new American made car, as you wanted, from the factory.

Gardner would add sights for $47 to any accessory barrel that didn't normally come with them, so if you ask, Ilion probably would too, but expect the cost to be considerably higher now.

It would be interesting to find out, if anyone is going to contact them, what sights they would (if they would) use and the cost to add to the FAQs.
FWIW: I really hate those chinzy, plastic things so often called open sights these days.

Won't be me calling, I haven't been able to use open sights for years, the WGRS peep works fine tho, its use would only require one hole to be drilled and tapped for the front sight, $20 by most gunsmiths.

If the 357 doesnt come with any sights what about holes that might
be pre drilled for a scope mount ?  Where are they and can they
be used for mounting the peep sight?
If not, do the peep sights usually require holes to be drilled
and tapped or are they just glued on ?

The WGRS mounts in the two rear scope mount holes, H&R sells it for about $25, ALL recent production H&R rifles come drilled and tapped for a scope mount.

been having some of the same thoughts as some of you guys but what would be an estimate for a gunsmith to install a front sight on a standard barrel?

i  had one of my 45-70 cut  and  sight reinstalled
$25  cut and crown
$20 to reinstall sight

been better off not wasting  money on the sight and   just scoped  it
think  i will  scope it after  all

scopes  just work so much better

Ive 'intended' to drill/tap my .22Mag Ultra Varmint for a front ramp (1 screw is all) for some years now and use the WGRS peep. Now Im so used to it with a tidy scope mounted that Im not going to bother. I still shoot open sights on my rifles with them, but dont do as well as I used to. ie, if you cant see it, you cant hit it.
If you must have open sights, then you are just 'going to have to bite the bullet' and pay to do it.
Figure its that cost vs the cost of a scope, 6 'o one, half doz. 'o the other.
