Model 14 Remington
« on: January 18, 2010, 05:12:36 PM »
How are scopes mounted on this type of rifle.  Ihave one my father had in the 1950's. He sold it in the late fifties. After he died in 2003 I found a picture of him with a deer he killed in 1954. I traced the gun down and got it back. He had an old scope and some mounts no rings but he had been looking for the old rifle for  a long time. How is the mount supposed to go. I checked weaver and the numbers match. The mounts are in old weaver brown paper envelopes. I have seen pictures mounted on the receiver and barrel. This can't be right because this rifle breaks in half at receiver to clean. Anyone out there knows how to find out. I called Weaver and they weren't sure. HELP!!!

There are three problems with putting a scope on a 14.  First, the receiver has a hump on the front.  The locking lug recess is under this hump.  So, the front and back mounts must be of different thickness.  Or, if a one piece mount is used, it must be relieved for the hump.  Second, if the front mount is installed on the receiver, the scope will be too far back because the front ring will interfere with the scope adjustment knobs.   I have only found one scope that will work with this setup, and that is a Redfield Widefield.  Installing the front mount on the barrel solves this problem.  If a one piece mount is used, it is best to have it stick out past the front of the receiver.    Third, the stock is designed to be used with iron sights, not a scope.  So, the scope should be mounted as low as possible.  The easiest way to mount the scope low is to use a very low Weaver ring.  The front hump adds to the height problem.  Bottom line, the best way is to use Weaver 2 piece bases with the front base on the barrel.  You probably wont find bases listed for this purpose, so you will need to experiment with what you can find.

OBTW, I see you posted a similar question on the RSA forum.  There you said your rifle was already drilled and tapped.  If you post a picture here or there, it will help. I am Rickster over there.

I just had an old Bushnell 1.5 X 4.5 Scope Chief mounted on my 14-35 Rem..The smithy used a Weaver one piece base. He extended the piece out over the receiver 1 in. and taped into the bump. He then used a small SS washer to raise the back of the base, taped into the receiver and set the screw down through hole in the washer. He also bedded the base with epoxy before he screwed everything in place. With factory ammo I'm getting a 3 shot group into an 1 1/4in , 2in. high at 75 yds.
