Williams Firesight Ghostring Replacement
« on: January 15, 2010, 07:26:53 AM »
Has anyone tried the new Ghostring sight replacement for Williams firesights on a Sidekick?  I am wondering how it would work to replace the fiberoptic notch rear sight with this, especially considering how far forward the rearsight is mounted on a Sidekick.  As other threads have mentioned, I know you can get an entire Williams Peep Sight that mounts on the rear of the Sidekick but this Ghost ring is a nice inexpensive $10 and also has fiberoptic dots on each side of the ring which I like.  Here is the link to Brownells for anyone interested:

If you have tried this or do, let me know the results.  I am concerned about sight radius and sight picture with the ring mounted so far forward.  I actually already ordered it but would still like to hear from others on their experience.

I don't know about this one, but you can take the insert out of the Williams and then you have a ghost ring with a long sight radius.

I recieved the ghost ring and replaced the v notch insert on the original rear sight in the original forward position and the sight picture is a big improvement on a regular open sight.  Probably not as precise as a rear mounted peep sight however.  Haven't gotten to the range yet, so it is not tested for sighting in, but will be shortly.

Let us know how it works out, I want to do something similar on my 45 Colt Carbine. It's too convenient to carry one handed while hunting holding it by the receiver to put a peep sight or scope in the way.

My 2008 accessory .50 cal barrel has been acceptable to 60 yards but sprays all over at 100 yards. (After the backlog of barrels I will be happy to even have one for my NEF .223 )   After much reading and help with this forum, I decided to order the Williams peep sight to mount further back help with the sight radius. I have ordered the Metrix breach plug with Nick.  I will start using the Blackhorn 209 powder instead of the Shockeys Gold pellets.  I will experiment with getting away from the TC Power Glide sabots.  And I will get a good sturdy sighting in sled.  I really want to make sure I'm not causing the stray bullets and then will start with the other components. The forum has been very informative. Appreciation goes out to all. Jay

Jay,

Doing exactly what you state in the second and third sentence in your modified quote will get you the accuracy you are looking for.

It don't get any worse for inconsistency than APP or Shockey's Gold, especially the sticks. Those powders need to be packed very firm, with a snug fitting bullet/saboted bullet on top. The EZ Glide type sabots have never been accurate in any of my rifles. Get a good snug fitting saboted bullet and the BH209, and you will see your groups shrink substantially.
