Huntsman 12 Gauge
« on: January 14, 2010, 02:57:23 PM »
I have a Huntsman 12 gauge and no manuel as I purchased it from a guy years after he had bought it and had lost it. No where does the gun say blackpowder only. Serial number starts with AL which puts it early 70's.
Can you use modern propellents in this muzzleloader as some of the newer ones?

Thanks

Black powder subs only. If you want I will send you some load data from actual manual also the Lyman I think 45th edition has loads for the Huntsman. I leave in about 10 minutes for final deer camp of the yr but will be back by tuesday. Kurt

A light starting load would be 75gr FFG with a 1 1/8oz shot with a over powder cushion and an overshot card. You can also shoot a .715 round ball out of it. Kurt

Kurt, Is that 0.715" round ball patched at all? I have had pretty good luck with the Lyman Shocker Sabot slugs in my H & R Shotgun using 1 1/4 volume measure of Pyrodex RS.

I have only shot it twice with a ball shot more for effect than anything don't remember what I used for a patch but it has to be thin to get the ball down if IRC. I don't remember who but someone sent me the 2 balls to try. I just don't have the need to shoot the smooth bore when I have the .45,50 and 2 .58's that are rifled so I never pursued it any further. I just like to try to harvest deer with one of every type of gun and preojectiles I have, hence the round balls. I also had good smoothbore accuracy in my H & R using a 0.690 ball, wrapped in a heavy denim greased patch, followed by a 1/2 felt wad. The felt wad was screwed to the back of the ball with a drywall screw, sandwiching the patch between the ball and wad. So the unit flew like a badminton birdie. Pretty good accuracy at 50 yards for a smootbore, better than plain patched ball. I suppose the energy dropped off fairly quickly, but man what a job it did on a deer at 40 yards.
