7mm-08
« on: January 14, 2010, 04:09:16 AM »
This question is for those of you that own a Handi in this caliber.
I'm intrested in buying one of these barrels and down loading it for my 12 year old using hodgdon's data. This would be a 100 - 150 yard rifle. My question is are ya'll having good luck with this caliber or is it giving you trouble with accuracy. Any and all help would by greatly appreciated.

I purchased the 7mm08 for my wife in the youth model. Recoil is very light and the size (length of pull) is perfect for her. Tried a number of factory loads and come to find the Rem 140 gr. shoot just under 1 inch at 100 yards with the Simmons 3x9 scope (inexpensive) It just dosen't get any better than this for a firearm right out of the box.  We are very pleased with this purchase and this rifle has become her go to deer rifle. :)  Wishing you  the best on your choice!

I just bought one, but haven't shot it yet. I am going to shoot Rem. Core Lokt 140's. Everything I have heard on this gun pointed to these bullets. If it shoots half as good as it handles, it will be my #1 deer rifle.

Mine shoots Fusion ammo acceptably, it's the only factory ammo I tried in it, 1½" at 100yds.

has anyone tried the reduced youth loads by hodgdon. They show a 120 and 130 grain load using H4895 at 2605 and 2503 fps respectively.

I've not, but I've read a lot of reports, both good and bad, so if that doesn't work out, you can always try Trail Boss. ;)

Thanks for the link I did not know that about trail boss. According to the site you can use trail boss in any cartridge, where H4895 can only be used in cartridges it's listed for. How cool is that.

I've got a 7mm-08 Handi that's kinda like a red-headed step child.  It shoots MOA at 100 if I do my part, but the poor guy kinda lanquishes in a gun cabinet while I use the Handis in pistol calibers I prefer.  It shoots the 140 Rems very well.

Is that out of the box accuracy or did you bed the fore end or float the barrel or something? Just wondering.

I've had mine for only 6 months, but it is a 1" shooter out of the box.  For lighter loads I use Nosler 120 gr BT over 46 gr of H4350.  It's a nice mild load that will take deer very cleanly.  For a full load, mine likes the Remington 150 gr core locks over the same powder charge.  The two loads shoot so close I can use the same sight setting for both.  If you buy the youth model, you can later add the full size stocks when he gets taller.  You are making a good choice.  Enjoy!  44 Man

daman,
got the barrel here, and did the fit from the faq's, and the o-ring forearm float, best factory ammo for it was Winchester Supreme 140 (Nosler Ballistic Silver tip), but the handloads show more promise by far.
Those silver tips worked, but whatever the stuff is they coat with was a dickens to clean out of the bore, sure messed with shooting copper jacket till it was all cleaned out

Isn't it some kind of moly coating. A buddy of mine shoots them through a Ruger m77 270. My savage 243 doesn't like em and shoots the old super x like it was made for them.
