My new mannlicher... (did I spell that right??)
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:30:30 PM »
Was at the local gunshow today and I happened across this.  I had never actually seen one of these in person before.  Are they very rare?  This one was in just about perfect shape.  Not real sure if it had ever been fired.  It's chambered in .223.

I do have a question about it though.  There is a front sight post on the barrel, but no rear sight.  I assume it was removed at some point to mount the scope.  Anybody know where I could get a factory replacement rear sight?

Anyway, I thought you guys might like some pics.

Nice looking rifle!  ;) The forends were available on rifles several years ago, then Gardner found a bunch of the forends a few years later and sold them for $35 shipped w/barrel band, IIRC, so there are a bunch of them out there.

H&R offered sights for any accessory barrel for an additional $47 before the Gardner plant closed, the .223 20" Superlight barrel also came with sights, there have been at least two sight styles, later barrels have Williams WGOS sights which are mounted with two screws, older barrels had H&R proprietary sights mounted with just one screw.

NICE FIND!!!
My rear site on my mannlicher came with a williams dovetail site. Like ones so common on "22" of the sixty and seventies. Little drift in fold down jobber.

How long is that forearm?

I finally found that elusive 44 barrel I've been looking for and I'd love to have one of those to go with it. I was planning on shortning the barrel and it doesn't look like I could and still use that long forearm...

The forearm measures 18" from end to end..

The barrel just has a single threaded hole where the rear sight would go.  Is there a nice after-market sight that would work?  I might remove the scope and just go with open sights on this one.

Just wondering, why do you think somebody put it together and it is not factory?  Is there a way to tell via serial number how it came?  I checked the barrel, and it does have the last 3 numbers of the serial number stamped in it, and it matches the reciever, so I know the barrel and reciever came together.

I've always found the Mannlicher stocks attractive.
It's tough finding anything around here with them.
I have to say they are a nice addition to the Handi.

I made a barrel band for my Mannlicher using a bicycle inner tube. I just cut a 1" thick cross section and made a big black rubber band out of it. It doesn't put much pressure on the barrel (it still floats). I have a monte carlo cheek piece on mine, but I really like the straight stock on yours. Thanks for posting the pic.

You can tell when the frame was made by the serial number prefix build year list in the FAQs, just because the numbers on the underlug match doesn't mean it came originally with that barrel, accessory barrels are marked the same way. You can call H&R, they may be able to tell you how it was originally configured, toll free (866)776-9292.

No need to be disappointed if it isn't original, one of the great things about H&Rs is all stocks and forends fit all frames with the exception of some shotgun forends, you can mix and match all you want.  ;)

Brownell's sell the parts for the old style single screw mounted sight, all but the cross pin which you may be able to find a suitable replacement at a hardware store.
