Update...WARNING /pictures....New member
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:28:08 PM »
Hey guys/gals

First off, I found this forum because although I know basically nothing
about muzzleloading,I want to learn & just picked upa well used
.45 Huntsman to learn with.

But I'm worried I made a mistake in my choice after reading some info on here,
because of it's age & lack of support/parts availability.

The serial # is AL333XXX which makes it a 1973,Right?
They plastic trigger guards/spacer pieces had me doubting the year... plastic in '73?

It's also missing the Ramrod & I'm hoping Mr Hubbard will still make on for me.

I plan on buying a good book (any recommendations?) & maybe a DVD on
black powder/muzzloading before I even think about shooting it.
But also contemplating trying to find a gun smith to look it over first
to make sure it's even safe to shoot.

Anyway...
Thanks for reading my looong hello & for any advice/help with my newbie questions.

I have a .50 Huntsman but I think the .45 was a little more picky about what it would shoot. Maybe someone else has one and can help you.

after reading about the "push-in" type breech plugs (which I think I have)
I've decided this should not be the one I learn with.

Now what to do with it?.... If I sell it/give it to someone & they get hurt
can I be sued?

Maybe just sell it "as-is" for parts?

Well,as my screen name implies, last night I had the jitters about firing an
old huntsman with the push-in style breech plug.

But the light of day, reading some more posts from here &
a nice e-mail from Mr Hubbard has changed my mine....again. ::)

So,my first goal will be to remove that stubborn breech plug.
Pictures posted soon.

For future reference JM don't get in a hurry to unload a gun just because it may seem to be faulty.
Always do your homework before doing so, a lot of times there's easy/cheap fixes for them.
It might take these guys a day or two or three or four........well you get it, to post about it.
I've found there is a very knowledgeable group of people here on Greybeards forum.

Oh and by the way welcome aboard, glad you found us.

The firing pin & the area surounding the pin is also scarred up like the brech plug edge.
(couldn't get pictures, camera's not that good at small stuff.)

That's a nice old smokepole. I'd clean it up and shoot it.

Bubba that may be another one of those "huntin lap warmers ". JM you can clean that gun up no problem they come in a lot worse shape than that and get ressurected. The stocks are very easy to strip and oil or stain and seal. Some have very nice grain once you get rid of the factory gunk. Kurt
