barrel liner questions

I found a site that sells barrel liners in 5/8" and 7/8" diameters.  my question is are they OK to use as a barrel or will it need suport of an outside barrel? Im looking into making a 9mm barrel for a handi. 5/8" is thicker than the barrel in my pistol. Im wanting to do it as a carbine length,16 to 18". anyone see any problem with this? DR

I do not see any way to do it but inside another barrel; but not for strength. If you do not use another barrel, you would need to weld on a lug and the diameter would be way too small to fit the frame. I do not think you could weld a lug to that small diameter with out distorting it either. Get a suitable barrel and bore it for the liner. A 20 gauge barrel is .614" in the bore so a 5/8" (.625") liner would need very little boring to fit. Liners are either glued or soldered into place so you need to bore the barrel a little over size to fit properly. Of course you would need to fill the gap between the liner and the original chamber which is larger than the bore. My understanding of liners is they still need to be chambered (reamed) for your particular cartridge. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

How about using one of the liners and follow a previous thread on making an 'insert barrel'?

Maybe you could just use a real small section to insert the liner into and then just have the liner from there.

The 'easy' insert is to turn a snug fitting shotshell shaped breech, bore and thread to a common thread that you can do on the dia. 'barrel you choose and fit it for headspace. Chamber it up and make a muzzle end 'spacer' c/w set screws to tighten onto the insert barrel (liner) and enough clearance for an o-ring groove for a firm (withlube) fit in the shotgun barrel. This 'spacer' can then be moved up and back to find the 'sweet spot' for harmonics.
With just a small 'extractor' groove at the breech end you can pop the cases out with a small tiped screwdriver.
You can get fancier, but this works.

Very well done and documented, Larry. I think it was a five star project (5X5). The prototype is always the worst, so you should really go into semi-production! I'll bet a lot of guys would go for a 25-20 or 32-20, 30 carbine, 32M, etc.
I'm please to see the accuracy, though I expected it to be good. If a guy wants to shoot bench groups that heavy 12ga. would be just the ticket for about a 10 barrel swap set.
BTW, a 'floating' spacer with the barrel hole a little off center would allow you to dial in the insert barrel for point of aim on a sight gun (no scope).
Now lets see, a dbl gun with two such inserts, dialed in for X distance.........

actually I was thinking more of a stub project. I have several 410 bore stubs saved just for these kinds of jobs. DR

I think, with a .410 barrel, I would take a 5/8 drill and run it into the breach end to just in front of the forearm lug.  Thread the end of your barrel and screw on a long nut, you could use a 5/8 rod coupling, make the nut about a half inch long so that when you cut the ejector slot you still have some full threads left on the nut and barrel.  Turn the nut round to about 3/4 inch and bore the rear of the stub a half inch deep and a little more than 3/4 inch.  You need about .005 over the nut diameter, so you could bore the breach end 3/4 then turn the nut slightly smaller.  With this sholder on the breach end you will not need a sholder in front of the barrel lug, just clean every thing up and coat it up with JB weld, drop the barrel in from the breach and clamp it in against the sholder in the stub.  When it all sets up after a day or so, turn the breach flush with the stub, and put a little taper on the stub in front of the forearm lug.  Polish every thing up and you are all set, you may want to finish the taper on the stub before you put in the barrel, it will make it easier to contour it.  I did exactly this process on a Rossi Youth 410 to 22 Hornet, minus the forearm lug part, and it has worked out perfectly.  Larry

 dangerranger,  I have watched this tread for the past couple of days just to see what ideas you would get on how to ?
I think most people read the different methods and decide for themselfs what they can do with there skills and tools available to them and then either go with a idea or drop the whole thing and forget about it.
Your origanal post states that you want to make a 9 mm barrel for a handi, and thinking of using a barrel liner for a barrel .
You did not state what you were using as a donor barrel / stub to build this with ?
I will give you a short version of the way I have made many handi barrels with liners and you can go the way you like with the project.
I start with a shotgun barrel that fits the frame you are going to use this "new" barrel on, I prefer to use a 20ga. but you can use any from 28 ga. to 12 ga. for your donor barrel.
If you were using the 28 ga. the 5/8 liner would be the way to go, otherwise you would need the 7/8 dia. liner for the 20,16, or 12 ga.
I asume you have a lathe available or someone that can do it for you but the idea is to turn the outside diameter of the liner to the same profile as the chamber and bore of your shotgun barrel minus about .005 to .007 for clearance.
Once you have the liner fitted to where it can be inserted into the shotgun barrel and the larger chamber end of the liner stops up against the forcing cone area inside the shotgun barrel and the breech end is flush with the breech face of the shotgun barrel it can be epoxy glued in or soft soldered if you like.
I will leave the rest of the work, chambering, and making the extractor cuts to your own method.
Once you have the length to 16 to 18 ' if you feel the barrel is to heavy towards the muzzle end you can remove just about as much of the O.D. of the outer barrel as you dare to lighten it.  Jedman

 Jedman, Im glad to hear that someone else had tryied the liners as a barrel. the only liner I had ever worked with was a 22lr liner that was so limp that it definatly needed suport. once it was installed in an old barrel it brought new life to that old gun but it was definatly not a stand alone. I installed it with Accue Glass, and was very happy with the result. for this project I have a 410 stub and am thinking of just threading the whole stub . the stub is only about 4" long. I think a 223 extractor should work. we will see how it turns out, I have a son who is stuck on 9mm. so He will really like it. DR

 Since you are working with a stub, one of the methods that Larry described is the way to go.
Check websites like Gun Parts Inc and see if you can find a 9mm barrel made for a rifle, often the price is much lower than what I have seen liners for.  Good Luck,    Jed
