I haven't tried the punch baits, because I've so little success with ANY manufactured bait.  I've tried most of the dough and dip baits at Wal-Mart and Bass Pro and they just don't work well for me, whether it's a river or a lake.  I'll say that it's been several years though, and I haven't tried any of the newer ones on the market.  I've fished them alongside other baits and they always came in last.  Chicken/beef liver work ok for me, some other store baits and stuff, but cut bait is the rule!

Up here and in the Red River/North Dakota we use shrimp, frogs, cut goldeye/suckers for the bigger cats, mostly channels, flatheads, some blues. For dip/punch baits we really like Cattracker baits from here in Iowa although I'm not sure they're still in business. Sonny's and Doc's are both made in IA also and popular here as well. Bowkers out of Nebraska is another I hear about.
But my all-time favorite is chicken guts, need to be still slightly frozen and are a mess to handle, but they work.

10-4 on the chicken guts-----used them as a kid and caught stringers of nice cats and then got too advanced or smart to continue using them.  Went to cut, live, stink, punch, etc but chicken guts is hands down a killer bait.
