Deep Freeze in the South?
« on: January 06, 2010, 01:43:53 PM »
Five people froze to death so far, and the president hasn't call it a national emergency? Get the CDC on it, maybe they can change the unused and useless pigflu shots into idiots who freeze to death shots. It has been under 10 degrees here since thankgiving and the only people that have died from the cold are the ones that were dunked in ice water, actually some of us even sit in deer stands when it gets cool up here. They don't sell sweatshirts south of the m-d line?

Not commenting on the people who have died.
Or how the guberment has or has not dealt with it.

For the most part people in the south are not acclimated to the colder tempertures.
Thier homes aren't usually insulated as well as further north either.
On top of that there is no shortage of dumb people down south either. ;)

I lived in Duluth MN for a couple years so I got a decent idea of what cold is.
People down here for the most part are not exposed to temps this low and don't know how to react. Not that it should be that big a deal.
I live down south because I don't like these tempertures. You folks up north are a hearty bunch and don't seem to mind.

Thank goodness for global warming ...83 degrees tomorrow...

Ought to call up congress and have them send down some of that hot air that's always blowing strong there.

The freeze has been great for thickening up the lakes for ice fishing!
Maybe they will get to try it down south too!

You can't get much further south than us here in Alabama, and it is FREEZING!  There are talks of snow today.  I will attest that we aren't really used to these extreme temps for more than a day or so at a time and now it has been below freezing for a week and talks of longer.  We aren't really equipped to have these temps this long.  Our central heat will NOT keep the house warm.  We have had to place space heaters throughout the house to compensate.  Our pipes are in danger of freezing up so we have to leave the water on a drip all night.  Anti-freeze in the cars to keep them safe.  I don't think we own jackets that are suitable for this kind of weather as there isn't usually a need, so we are staying indoors as much as possible and when travel is necessary we layer up.

We southern folks don't like the cold hence why we live in the south.  Heck our school system shut down today because of a few snow flurries.  Now knowing all of this I still can't figure out how people are freezing to death.  All of the salvation army places are turning NO ONE away from a warm place to stay and a hot meal.  If they stayed in the cold with an alternative then it is natural selection working at its best.  ;)

All kidding aside, people don't usually die from cold when it is extremely cold. We are well prepared and dress accordingly. It is that subtle chilly cold 25-40 that lulls people into hypothermia gently, then they just go to sleep and never wake up. When it 20 below, and the air feels like you are breathing jagged glass, you just don't relax , you know you are in DANGER.

OK Guys, Enough of this.  I'm leaving North Pole tonight to go south to get out of the snow and ice.  Going to My brothers (lionhunter) house, then Monday we are driving to Nashville for a week.  That means if we hit snow, I'll have to drive, He's never driven in snow before.

I remember growing up in Tennessee, some years we did not get any snow.  Other years we would get a lot, and it would be knee deep.  I remember playing on frozen ponds, then having to use an ax to cut a hole along the edge where the cattle could get a drink.

We have an ice carving of Al Gore sitting on the back of a truck at one of the intersections of Fairbanks.  The exhaust of the truck is hooked up to where Al is spouting hot air out of his mouth.  It's really been drawing a crowd. Here is the link.

Here in western Pa. We had snow everyday this week with temps in the low to mid 20's. Not that I'm complaining. I'll take a day in the mid 20's any time over a 90 degree humid day.
I'm also waiting for a local lake to get enough ice, so I can break out the tip-ups.

Yeah we got only a dusting but really it's the most snow we've seen here in at least five or six years maybe longer. As you can see some did lay at least tho darn little. I can't recall the last time snow actually laid here but it has to be a minimum of five or six years.

The pond had more and thicker ice Tuesday but it warmed last night to above freezing for the over night low for the first time in well over a week and much of it melted. It is not to be above freezing again until mid day Monday so there will be more ice soon. It's to be 17 tonight and 9 to 12 the next few nights after that.

It's 12 deg here right now with about 3 inches on the ground. Slick going to work, slicker coming home. Took an hour to drive home, usually 35-40 min. Dropped a heat lamp in the cistern Sunday evening, I could hear ice rattling around in the pumps tank Sun morning. Sgl digits for the weekend. If it wasn't for al gore we'd be in big trouble. I've been working around Minot North Dakota since the Monday after Christmas just got back in time for some balmy 5 degree temps.
Bowbells ND had a wind chill of -52 this morning, and they want to send me back up for 2 wks.
I can deal with the cold but them nawthin folk don't have sweet tea and what they call a chicken fried steak would get someone hung down here.

It was just warm enough here today to partially melt the snow so all bridges and over passes are wet and now with the drop in temp are covered in ice. They've unofficially (I think) closed the roads and are advising everyone to not be on the roads unless it is an emergency in the morning. Schools are all either closed or will begin several hours late tomorrow.

Down here we are just not prepared to deal with such conditions. Probably a third or more of the drivers on the road here have never driven in snow and likely half have never done so more than once. Black ice on roads is an invitation to disaster and tomorrow that's what we are facing. In fact I think Faye said the weather radio reported many roads are already blocked and impassable due to the wrecks from the ice already formed.

Well, it is cold in Houston.
It is amazing, if you don't live in Houston, that 15 miles north of Deer Park, the temperture is probably 20 degress colder.
It is in the low 30's where I live, probably about 30.
The coast keeps us warm.
The house is well insulated and the temp in the house is about 74 degrees and we are hunkered down. The Hen canceled her hair appointment.  :o
Most of the homes here are well insulated and have been since the early 60's--not from cold but for A/C. 3 1/2 in the walls and 6/8 inches in the attics.
The outside pipesmay freeze but the ones in the attic should be OK since we use the water all day. I may let them drip tonight.
You guys up north---and that may be farther south, now---just hunker down, especially if you are old, like me.
Blessings

It is so good to be living on the left coast--for now anyway.

I saw an Algore apologist on TV explaining how these Arctic-air episodes happen from time to time in spite of global warming.  I'm wondering where the explanations are for tropical-air invasions during global cooling.  Fair and balanced huh?
