Anybody have one? Any problems with these? Anything I should know about it?

I've only owned one S&W in .45 Colt. It was so bad I've never been brave enough to try another but in fairness it was a LOOOONG time ago. I don't recall specifically but around the late '60s to very early '70s time frame.

Back then the cylinder throats were grossly over size and accuracy no matter what I did was dismal. If they've gotten that problem resolved it might be a nice revolver to own but be aware ya can't push it to Ruger load levels as the metal is really thin in that cylinder when you put six holes sized for a .45 Colt in there. It should be OK at .45 ACP factory pressure levels but I'd go no higher.

I have one and it is one of my favorite revolvers, just has a good feel to it. Mine shoots great at 20-25 yards, can't say I have ever shot it at a longer distance. I can break clay pigeons at 20 yards on a regular basis. I shoot standard 45 colt loads in it using a Hornady 250 gr. XTP bullet and HS6 powder. Very mild recoil.

:)I had one in .45 colt and traded it to my shooting pal, now he won't let go of it...It shot fine...I enjoyed it and foolishly let it get away...Now I have one in44 mag. love it also..But liked the grips on the .45 best...

What is the difference in the grips?

The .44, has a flatter grip, the old one had a fuller grip with nice wood....

I have the 625-9 .45 Colt Mountain Gun, it shoots the 255 grn, but really shines with the 200 grn load. Do to the light 4 inch barrel you will get less recoil and thus faster follow up shots with the lighter bullets. The Hogue grips work best if you stay with the 255 grain load. It is a light packing, very accurate gun that can quickly become your favorite carry piece.

I have one in .45 Colt. Off hand it will stay inside 6" at 50 yards and it's 25 yard groups are just fine. No problems with oversized throats.

My pet load pushes a 255 grain hard cast bullet at 1100 fps for hunting, and a couple grains less gives me 980 for general target work. I'd like to get rid of the rubber grips that S&W slapped on it and give it something with a little more character. That's for another day. This weekend I'm going to be looking for its twin in .44 at a local gun show.

Mine is a 625-9 series.
No problems.
I like the rubber grips, not for looks,but
are very comfortable for recoil.
Fit and finish and specs are very satisfactory.
This gun is accurate.
255 grain reloads at about 900fps can be enjoyably
shot all day.
You can very safely load warmer if that is your desire, but the need
to do so is not that pressing for me.

And, they are steadily creeping up in price.

I have never owned a model 625 but I do have a model 25-9 that was a special one Per S&W Stocking dealer offering in 2000 and they came in High Polished blue as shown. It is a great shooter...It came with the small wimpy Grips shown on it and I swapped them out for the Larger style Round Butt conversion style for better Target shooting...Hammerdown

that's a nice gun. I really prefer the look of blued guns over stainless, but it seems S&W has gone to mostly stainless in the last few years.
Just how many S&W revolvers do you have?

I have a Few... I have been into Strickly S&W revolver collecting for the past 30 Years or so... You do see these Blued model Mountain Gun's Pop up occasionally if you watch the Internet you will eventually find one. I am not sure Just how many were made but I do know they only produced One per S&W stocking dealer so that would exclude most smaller dealers if S&W felt they did not sell enough Gun's as it was a sales reward type Promotional Dealer item...Hammerdown

Hi Kevin, I too like the look of blue but since getting into stainless there is a plus side. I have noticed for some unknown reason all of my stainless guns lead less than their blued counterparts. Also the holster wear isn't there it just gets a little shiner. Best of luck getting what you want, if you plan on shooting lead bullets you might want to consider using Trail Boss powder. It was especialy made for lead and you can't double charge a load because of its bulk.

I have one of the newer SW mountain Guns in 41Mag and I was impressed with fit and finish as well as accuracy. I have no problems with leading at all. It is a blued model.

I did have a minor problem with this 625. The cylinder release thing was a bit shallow, opened hard. It is a fine shooter.

I had an opportunity to buy one last year, but it did not work out. I think they are fine revolvers. As to the thin cylinder walls. My 625 cylinders measure 1.720 inches in diameter. My Ruger .45's mike 1.730 inches - not enough to consider IMHO. I think there is a considerable difference in frame strength between the Rugers and the Smiths, but the M25 Mountain Gun is plenty of gun for the .45 Colt.

P.A.Myers: Nice revolver, your full underlug has more weight than the Mountain Gun. You should have less flip to the barel with 255 grain and higher bullets.

My 625-9 will shoot the 255 grain bullets acuratly but require the Houge grips to keep the punitment down on my hands. The lighter barrel does best with 200 grain bullets, alowwing use of the wood grips.

Actually, the outside diameter of the cylinders is comparable to the Ruger Blackhawk cylinders? I believe the problems lie in the lack of heat treating? Think if one logs onto John Linebaugh's site, you will see this? Yes, the oversized cylinder throats of a certain era were the culprit of poor accuracy of one specific era(pinned barrels). I took it the original poster was refering to new 625 Mountain Guns?

My everyday reload for my 625 is 8.6gr. of Unique
under the 255swc.
I have loaded up to 9gr. for the MG, but 8.6gr. is exciting
enough for me, and it is accurate in my gun.

I have two SS Blackhawks that like the same load, also.

I have passed up two 25-13s because I did not
have the money at the time. I do want one someday.

Thanks old112. I've only been shooting Black Hills 250 rnfp cowboy load sofar. I know 8g of Unique under a 255 lswc is pretty much a factory dupe, 8.6g of unique isn't too much pressure for a 25 is it?

It is not unusual for 45 colt to be loaded 9.5-9.7 of Unique. Pressure is about 38,000, no problem for a Model 25. The only difference between a 29 and a 25 is the size of the holes.

That's true as far as it goes but it over looks the fact the holes are quite a bit larger and the metal quite a bit thinner when the holes are for a .45 Colt. One point too many seem to forget is that S&W places the notches over that thin part not between the chambers like Ruger and that makes for a very thin and thus very weak area at the notches.

It is a wiser plan to treat the S&W .45 Colt the same as if it were a .45acp and to not exceed pressure levels standard for it. That "should" be safe tho any time you push beyond SAAMI pressure levels you are taking the chance it might not be as safe as you assume it to be.

Don't know where you're getting your information but, it's false! Heat treating is a big difference.

Back in 1995 John Taffin listed 8.5 and 9.0 grains of Unique as 901 and 964 fps respectively out of his md 25 with cci300 primers. I don't know if I want to push my md. 25 that hard, I'm looking for 850fps+ for a regular diet if it's accurate at 25yds. A load of 10g of Unique with WLP primers was very accurate out of my 5 1/2 inch Ruger Blackhawk, but 9g was just as acccurate and worked on Ohio deer out to about 50 yds.(my longest shot). I will shoot about 500rds a year.

The 625 mountain gun with 8.5 grains of Unique under a 255 grn bullet starts to be rough on the hands. The light 4 inch barrel can be a pain. I recommend you go to the IMR web sight and get the loading for Trail Boss powder. It is made for cast bullets and can not be double charged in the .45 Colt case.
