Can I Change Calibers/barrels on my Remington model 7 SAUM

I have a Remington Model Seven Custom Rifle Chambered in .300 RSAUM with a Boyds Thumbhole stock that has been floated.
Can I change Calibers or Barrels to make this Gun more of a Michigan "Friendly" Hunting Rifle?
Is it a Big Job,is it worth it in the long run, or should I just sell the Gun as it is and "Start" over?

I had a freind that just had a model 7 rebarreled, it was inexpensive compared to a new rifle. You can buy barrels off of the net for them and find you gun smith to change it for you. That was what he did, I think he got it done for around $200 barrel and all.

You could rebarrel to any of the other SAUM rounds but to make it anything else requires bolt face modification or replacement adding extra cost. Your best best is to trade it for what you want.

A SAUM is a Magnum Caliber in a Short Casing. Necked down but still packs a Punch
Difference Between the rem 300 ultra mag and the 300 SAUM is about 1/2" in casing Length  and necked down. and The Long Range ballastics.
Ultra mag= Longer distance with greater muzzle velocity,
Short Ultra Mag= Same distance but loss of Muzzle Velocity and extra Bullet drop.

I think Remington made only 7mm and .30 in the SAUM line but am not sure. I dunno if the Winchester rounds use same case head diameter or not. I was thinking not but since none of them have ever interested me I've really not paid much attention to them.

I am thinking a 300 SAUM will do alot of unnecessary Damage to a Deer.
I have a 700 in .270 and a 600 in a .243 So i do not know which way to go.
Rechamber with different Barrel or Just Sell it.
This Gun itself Shot and Handled Great, I felt less Recoil from this than my .270
Of course I only Shot it 5 Times at the Range to zero it in.

I have that same caliber.  And yes, with the wrong bullet for that much velocity it will create alot of damage(I found that out this year, lol.)  But... If you go with a premium bullet and/or reduce your powder charge it will be fine.  You can load it done to like a 308 or 30.06.  Just a option to keep the rifle and save you some money.  This is my second one and they seem to shoot very well for me.

Keep your gun, it already is Michigan friendly. Pick a bullet and/or load that will not destroy a lot of meat. The wrong bullet in any cartridge can destroy a lot of meat. It's interesting that you suggest the 270 and 243. In my opinion and experience for that matter, a 180 gr 30 cal bullet coming out the end of a 30SAUM does FAR LESS damage than a 130gr/270 0r 100gr/243. My own experience is with the 300 Winchester Mag, (not short mistake). A little more velocity, but 2 peas in the same pod. CRASH87

I bought mine because I really like the way the gun fits me and to me it comes up kind of like a shotgun. Mine is in 7 saum, but if I were you I would just load it down for deer, use a less violent bullet,"Barnes, Swift" and you will be happy. As said above, you can load it down to .308 levels with a 165-180 grain bullet the meat damage will be minimal.

To expand on what greybeard said.  Changing out the barrel will also require changing out the bolt and the magizine follower if you were to go to a 308 based shell (243, 260, 7-08, 308, 338 Fed, 358 Win.) or other short cases like 284 Win or the whole host of wildcats based on it.
My question is rather than trade it off and get what you want loosing $ in the process.
Why not just reload for the round and reload to 30-06 load levels.  only would cost you a reloader and dies.
There will be a payback for the reloader especally with the 300 SAUM rounds and you already have cases.
there are a wide variety of .308 bullets out there for deer from 125 grain to 180.
There should be some loading data to get the 150 to 180 grain bullets in the 2650 to 2900 feet per second.
And the reloader can add to the payback faster if you have other calibers you want to reload as well.  (pistol?)

You should load the premium bullets to solve the meat damage problem .
Second you can ream the SAUM to the WSM cartridge if getting ammo is a problem .
Since the SAUM cartridge guns are no longer made , I think the guns value will in time only go up.
Just something to think about .

If you reload, brass is offered by Remington, Norma and Nosler. If you shoot much, reloading is a good investment. It is nice to roll your own and get what you want.

I have a .280 that is loaded hot.  With 140grain Sierra gamekings, it is hard on meat, if it penetrates far enough into the hide.  Your 7 SAUM will have a bit more velocity than my .280, so you will either need to step up to a heavier bullet, somewhere in the mid 150's or 160's.  That should slow your bullet down enough.  Otherwise, try accubonds or another premium bullet.
