One of my brother in laws has one.  He likes it very well . . . especially for the price.  It has taken quite a few antelope, mulies, buffalo and elk.

I've got a synthetic in 300 Wby and it shoots well. It does get copper fouled pretty quick though. Mike

I can't say enough about them. I have one in .223 and it has been a great shooter straight out of the box and has accounted for quite a few Foxes and Cats and the price was easy on the Bank account!

Mine was fitted with an Accubrake and shot great.  Recoil was less than a 30-06.  Wish I still had it.   :?

Dear Globemountain,
I have worked on quite a few rebarreling and whatever and found them all good solid rifles. Yours would be the same surely. The same as the HOWAs , Smith & Wessons and the only real problem is the metric threads. I have three in the shop now for barrels and will do them all at the same time to avoid having to change the back gears so often. One in 280 AI and two more in 17PPC.

Is this the rifle Wal-mart sells? I almost bought one a couple of years ago but I don't think it's as strong as the Mark V, is it? I was going to get the 300 Weatherby. Glad I didn't now, the caliber not the rifle.

Old Cane,

The vanguard is NOT as strong as the Mark V.  That's because, in part, the vanguard is actually a Howa rifle with the Weatherby name.  This is not to say that Howas (or Vanguards) are not good rifles, but just that they are not, in most peoples' opinon, as strong as the Mark V.  Then again, how much strength do you really need?  I guess piece of mind is nice, but I have never heard of any failures from any big name bolt actions designs like that of Remington, Winchester, Browning, Howa, Savage, etc.
