boring polishing 223 ultra varmit

UPS is scheduled to deliver a new 223 ultra varmit to my FFL today.  Per many posts, 60 to 100 rds seems to be the range of shots needed to break in this barrel.  Handi 101 Basic thread says to polish the bore.  Anybody care to enlighten me on bore polishing and is the something a gunsmith needs to perform?   Thanks.   Goal is to have a gun that will take ground pigs out to 250 yds.

Lots of opinions on bore polishing. Whether new or a used this is what I do before I ever fire a gun.

Get a gallon of water boiling. With the muzzle resting on a rag in you kitchen sink pour the water a cupful at a time through the barrel. Every couple of cupfuls squirt some dishwashing liquid down the barrel. About halfway though scrub the bore with a jag and tight fitting patch. More boiling water then patch it again . Using a Parker Hale type wrap-around Jag and a tight fitting patch filled with JB Bore cleaning compound make about 25 strokes in each direction. Wipe out the barrel with a clean patch. Repeat the compound patch and wipeout with clean patch steps about 6 or 7 times. Boil some more water and clean it out real good. If nothing else the gun will forever be easier to clean.

MS Mule hit it on the head.  JB is what I used when I got my new 7mm-08 and this is what I used to get the job done.

Clean it real good and shoot it before you go to the trouble of polishing it.

I just went down that path with my 22-250 Ultra Varmint.

I prepared the barrel as per Jim Shults’ “Barrel Prep for Super Accuracy” (see the FAQ's).
I also "fire lapped" using Tubb’s final finish bullets (bougth from Midway). I followed Fred Bohl’s “Rifle Bore Lapping/Polishing”, Fire-Lapping New commercial barrels (see FAQ's).

I did more to the rifle, as you can see in my post. I basically went through the FAQ's and picked what I felt was my best fit.

New gun got the best of me, decided to shot it as opposed to spending a day prepping the bore.  I did clean the bore good with Hoppes first.  Just five shots this AM to start tweaking the scope in.  Will advise on how the gun performs @ the 100 round mark with just normal cleaning and the break-in with rounds versus polishing approach.  If i end up with a 3-MOA gun will probably come back asking for help with my tail between my legs.

I think I would just as soon shoot the 100 rounds.  :)  I've got a .223 on lay-away.  When that gets out, I'll clean it of course, then run a 100 rounds of wolf through it before I try to see what it will do with good hand loads.  44 Man

Hello 44 Man, quick question. 

Why shoot the steel case Wolf?  I can handload brass case rounds with FMJ-BT at five to 10 cents per round cheapier than the Wolf 223.  (My cost per round reflects the current value of my labor @ $0.00 per hour).
