handi comparison...
« on: December 31, 2009, 03:13:26 AM »
I have found a great deal on a Rossi set for my kids.  Its a 3 barrel set that comes w/ .50 cal, .22,and 20ga.  My question is, are these things any good?  I haven't ever shot one.  Its $168, butif it sucks I don't want it.

Rossis have a rep for recoil due to  weight and stock design. 20's and 50's are supposed to be brutal even for adults. That said if you want the 22 for the kids and the other barrels for you, why not......

If the 50 is the miniloader it has a cult following.

Just looked up miniloader .50 specs. 5lbs, 20" barrel, 34" OAL. Can you imagine the blast and recoil? That would be a neat toy though.

I bought the Rossi 22LR/410 combo about 6 years ago.   The shot barrel throws an excellent pattern but the stock is very uncomfortable with 3" 410's because of the light weight and the sharp edges of the crescent butt.   The 22 barrel is horribly inaccurate, and I could not even use the factory iron sights because the front sight is not at the 12 oclock position on the barrel.....it is canted over to   about 1oclock.

I do still use the 410 with a but pad but I will only buy and acquire H&Rs going forward since this learning experience.

I suppose I'm a firm believer in "ya get what ya pay for".  For my grandkids, I'd get the .357/20 ga. combo from budsgunsshop.com for 270.00 and then look at a .22 sportster.  I've got a Ruger 10/22 stainless synthetic, and I love the little rifle........but, I won't let my grandkids anywhere near it.  They need to learn to shoot accurately and make every shot good.....they aint gonna do it with a semi-auto spraying lead every which way.

The reason I see little value in Sportsters is that for $50-100 you can walk into any country gun store and get a 50 year old American made single shot bolt action youth stock .22. Often with a decent scope or collectible peep.

I have had H&R's and Rossi's. I recently sold a .243 in each, I loved the H&R it was just the compact model and I could not stand the short stock.... The Rossi was so inaccurate at 50 yards I won't even embarrass the little fellow by calling out groups.

But on the other hand I have a Rossi .223 that is bad to the bone!!!!! It shoots 1/2" moa at 100 yards out of the box. I put a Konus 50mm scope on it and it lives in my pick-up.

Then again liked the H&R so much I just ordered a new one in 7mm-08.

Moral of the story is try one or the other and it may work great for you, but then again you may hate it! There will be lemons in every make and model.

I thank God everyday for my loving wife and all the fond memories of hunting with my Papa from a child until now.

Please take time to take a kid hunting, it will be a life long memory and blessing for both of you!

They need to learn to shoot accurately and make every shot good.....they aint gonna do it with a semi-auto spraying lead every which way.

Amen to that Pete,,
That's just what I did with my boy, he was happy at 7 with that singleshot 22,,then got a bit of crap from his buddies when they all started getting auto's after "gun training" classes at age 11-12. It was a struggle.
But now @ 16 soon to be older, with a few 1st place tournements under his belt already, he laughs at his freinds wore out barrels and bolts. He understands breathing, concentration, shot placement and follow through, and a host of other neat little "I only have one shot" kind of mentality.
He makes me proud,,He has even given me the compliment of out shooting me every once in awhile.  :)

Oh and p.s.,,
I've looked at the rossi's,,Umm,,, Na,, I'll stick with just a step above that, thank you. Take the forearm off, break the action on one and look at it.

Well, I got it.  I got them to through in a 525 box of 22 ammo as well because of a small scratch and some poor customer service.  That box of ammo was worth over 10% ;-).
I haven't gotten to clean it up yet because oi wouyld have to explain that new looking gun to my ol' lady.  Its easier just to ease her into it.  I think I got a good deal, but I may still take it to the gunshow tomorrow and look for a trade for a .357 handi.
