35 whelen misfires
« on: December 23, 2009, 05:05:25 PM »
I am still having trouble with misfires on my 35 whelen handi. I sent it to a gunsmith. He told me that the hammer spring was weak and had to replace it. After he had I shot hand loads and factory loads with light primer hits and misfires. This is a brand new gun that I had not used to hunt yet. I missed all of the primative season and am totally disappointed with Handi rifles so far. One thing I noticed is that the transfer bar falls back towards the hammer when cocked back. Also that the transfer bar looks longer on my daughter's 243 or at least  sits higher on the firing pin than my 35. Anyone has any ideas besides getting a Encore.

Sounds like ya got a bad transfer bar too, it can be replaced by you of the gunsmith, Brownell's sells it, but since it's a new rifle, I'd contact H&R and have them fix it, ask them to send a UPS return label so it doesn't cost you anything but time and use.

I think it is bad too, I shot handloads and Remington Core-locks with it. They all have light primer hits unless I jerk the heck out of the trigger. The transfer bar barely covers the firing pin when the trigger is fully pulled.
