If I get a 35 Whelen, do I need a 357 Max?
« on: December 23, 2009, 04:12:31 PM »
I figure that I'll reload almost 100% for the Whelen, so I can try 158 grain pistol bullets, cast, whatever, down to 38 Special power and 310 grain Woodleighs up to elephant gun power. So why would I need a Max?

Should be good for whitetails out to a bazilliuon yards.

Not really unless you want to shoot 38 spcl and don't have a 357mag, and where would the fun be in only having the Whelen!!  ;D

Because you can load the max round using carbide dies, alot faster than loading the Whelen

A 250 grain Nosler partition out of the Whelen still has 1600ft-lbs+ of energy at 500 yards. That beats the Max at the muzzle. Since the Max is a 200 yard deer cartridge, I think makes a Whelen a 700+ yard deer cartridge.....lol

Yet is still qualifies as a primitive weapon in some places.

Never gonna be a brass shortage so long as 1x fired 30-06 is 10 cents per.

Always gonna be a tradeoff.

People have reported 35 Whelen case shortening when lots of light loads are fired.  The repeated firing pin impact drives the case against the chamber shoulder, gradually shortening it.  The firing pressure is not enough to expand the case fully.

An old American Rifleman article told of a group of squirrel hunters who had this problem with their 35 Whelens using lightly loaded pistol bullets.  Rechambering to the improved version, with a larger, sharper shoulder, stopped the problem.

A rimmed cartridge would work even better for light loads.

Useing that logic, we could go back to the 1700s, when a 20 ga. trade gun did it all.  No need for anything else, not much fun either ;)  Handis are like mountains....ya gotta do it cause they're there.

Nah, just thinking the Whelen outmaxes the Max. Primitive weapon good for squirrels in the backyard to deer at 700 yards to the occasional grizzly or lion.
