I've done alot of web searches and it's come up with links to GBO.
Do a google search for "Handi Rifle" and see how many GBO links you get. :D

Well, truth be known, back in the day I had the biggest beat in Atlanta.  Part of it was in a wealthy part of the city known as "Buckhead."  And I took my oath to "Protect and Service" very seriously...  ;D

Also a good way to find an old member on perhaps a diff forum providing they kept the same user name. Have had this happen at least five times during google searches but thought the said forums were not up to par with GBO.

Just post a few messages with threats to the president and see how long it takes to get a knock on your door.

As said it's normal behavior, but just to mention: any website that DOESN'T want to be indexed by Google can add a file to their upper level site called "robots.txt".  You can specify in that file which folders (or all) to ignore and the crawler will skip over them.  It's a standard that's been in place since the early days and Google (along with all the reputable search engines) respects it, but it is a voluntary thing (after all if a human can access the pages a computer most certainly can do the same :)).

Usually though leaving the search engines free to index your page only helps in getting your site out there, so unless you have good reason to it's better to let em roam :).

Google and the other search engines spidering this site and sending folks to it is why GBO is in the top one half of one percent of all websites on the internet in traffic coming to it. Without them rather than delivering 2.5 to 3+ million page views each month we'd be delivering a few thousand and most of you would have never heard of the site.

Being on the WW Web is all about wanting the WW exposure. Search engines are the primary exposure vehicle's for sites.

Unless you are only using the Web for convenience to a predetermined and select user group, it makes perfect sense for a site like GBO to want WW search engine exposure and the resulting traffic. Not to mention the statistical site hit rate can correlate to other money making opportunities.

All neat stuff....

All I know is, when I did an AOL search for Victor3, one of the 1st things to come up was...

"Find a luxurious selection of Victor3 at www.abcde.com"

I don't recall how long you've been hanging around here either Dand but longer than we've been on this current type software for sure. You were here when we used the software Matt wrote for us. You were the first person to register after Matt and me when we opened up registrations and told folks we'd be changing software requiring new registration as we couldn't transfer the database from Matt's software to the new format we now use. I believe that change over was Nov. 2002 if I recall correctly. Until then we had used software Matt wrote that used the older cascading format where you could reply directly to someone under their post rather than at the bottom of a thread as we all do now.

The first year or less we used a free ware program from BraveNet but it didn't take long to outgrow that. Heck it might have been only a few months I just don't remember. We quickly saw a need to do better than BraveNet offered so Matt wrote a program that was somewhat similar but of his own creation and it was used by us for quite a while until finally the database grew so large his software wasn't able to cope. Rather than improve and update it we went to this style using a commercially available program since it seemed by then most forum sites had switched to this format from the older original one that everyone began on.
