500 mag project, need optic ideas

Hey everybody!  I'm making a 16.5" 500 mag and I'm trying to decide what to do for sights.  I really don't like open sights so some form of optics will go on it.  Can't decide between a red-dot or a compact 4x scope.  Maybe this should have been a poll but what would you guys put on it?  I'll be using it for plinking, the occasional gopher, and possibly some close game.  Thoughts?

2-7X32 Nikon Prostaff will hold up under the recoil.

You might consider one of the Bushnell shotgun scopes designed for the cantilever barrels with long eye relief.  I got hit occassionaly when shooting my 500 without a muzzle brake.  Also, I had a 2x7 Nikon Prostaff break on a 500, but Nikon did replace it quickly.

I went with the Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 shotgun scope on my 500S&W Handi, it's worked well for almost 200 rounds so far, got 3 of em, great scopes for $100-$130.  ;)

How about a great little Leupold M8 2.5X????  This is one little sexy number!! Its got a 20mm objective, 1" diameter and about 15-20% smaller then there 1x4 varaibles. Would make a VERY NICE compact addition to this project!!

You could try the Leupold 1-4x20mm shotgun scope. The afore mentioned scope has plenty of eye relief, easily mounts on a handi barrel with no mods, medium rings, and will stand up to tremendous amounts of recoil. This Leupy has excellent field of view, and actual magnification is 1.6-4.2. I really like these scopes on my NEF's/H&R's

Not trying to hijack. Just want to ask Tim what rings are on the one in the picture? Did you have to bob the hammer for clearance?

Two local guys are replacing Burris scopes on their .500 S&W Encores every 30-40 rounds.  I'd be uncomfortable trying anything other than the scope Tim suggested.

Are you using the Nikon on your guns? If so... how has it held up? How are the optics? What rings are you using? I see them for sale at pretty reasonable prices and was thinking about getting one for my 45-70.

I have 4 of them and all my .45-70s wear them.  They are very clear.  I need at least one more for my .444.  They seem to hold up well.  I use Weaver Tip-offs or Burris Zee Rings.  They don't break or slip.

Low Leupold PRW, hammer is bobbed just enough to clear the scope.

I use the Burris 2 x 7 with German #4 reticle, and have had no problems with recoil. A NRA article listed Burris and Leupold as two of the best scopes for heavy recoiling rifles.

Mine has worn a couple different scopes.. ALL leupold's. ALL held up perfectly.

 Currently its wearing a VXII 2x7x32 with a German #1 reticule. Nothing wrong with Nikon, but its not the only good scope available. I tried a couple and don't like the looking thru a tube effect when on higher powers. Optics where clear and brite. IMHO, for the same cost I can get a used VXII Leupold and have a much better scope. Guys like them, for a couple reasons, cost, nice size for our hands and good quality. I just prefer a Leupold. To each his own.
