info request
« on: December 16, 2009, 01:17:45 PM »
I have just met a local machinist who has taken an interest in helping me with some of my Handi projects.  I need a little info to get the first one started.

Handi hammers: I want to shorten my hammers and install a custom hammer extension.

1. How much should be taken off the normal hammer spur to allow lower scope mounting? I would no longer use a normal hammer extension.
2. What type of steel is the hammer made of?
3. What's the best way to de-temper the steel and then reapply temper?
4. When installing a custom hammer extension, i.e. drill and tap new hole, how far down can the hole be drilled before contacting the barrel latch release button.

Question #1 and #4 are somewhat related in the fact that one can't be done without considering the other.  I will continue to search through and read the FAQs while this is simmering here drawing answers.

Thanks, Dinny

I remember some time back Tim putting a Winchester style hammer extension on a handi hammer...

The parts are surface hardened. I have had limited good luck heating to red and dunking in used motor oil.

IMHO, little to no alteration is required to the handi hammers. I have posted countless dozens of pics of LO rings and Leupold, Nikon, and Pentax scopes.

You can shorten the spur and drill it without annealing.

Shorten the spur with a Dremil cutoff disk.

Spot anneal. Put a nail in a drill press and crank the speed up. Hold the nail where you want to drill. It will turn red hot and actually melt.. Then drill the hole.

At H&R's request I sent pics of my hammer mods and the old style low spur hammer to them for their R&D on a new hammer and extension, I don't know if or when it may be adopted, but a low hammer spur and a current style hammer extension may interfere with the barrel release when mounted on the right side, I had that problem on my 35 Whelen Improved, moved to clear the barrel release, it hit the back of the frame before full travel, I ended up modifying the barrel release. The Win M94 style hammer extension is what I recommended, it's lighter and likely less expensive to produce. From previous input on hammer material, it's likely sintered iron(powdered metal).

On my .444 I mounted my scope with the lowest rings I could find.  I chopped almost all of the hammer spur off to make it fit.  I am using an extension like the last of Quick's photos, but mounted on the left side, so no interference and still easily operated.  Putting the hammer extensions on the left side is so much easier.

I still like swapping out the hammer and getting rid of the transfer bar. I've never liked transfer bars. They were invented because some people were too stupid to put 5 shots in a revolver instead of six.

Lawyes, eggheads and soccer moms have ruined a lot of good designs.

My Traditions persuit ML has a screw in hammer spur that looks to have a smaller diameter than the ones pictured in quicks photos. These might make right side mounting a little easier in clearing the barrel release. I have not looked on thier web site yet to see if they are available but i will

I checked Traditions web site and it is not in replacement parts. Called CS and was told that it is part # A1795 and is $3.95 plus $3.49 shipping.

$17 and some change for all 3. Charged $3.99 for each one. So it must have been around $5+ for shipping unless they charged for sales tax too.

Slufoot I can't post picks yet but can send them to your e-mail PM me with that, and I do not know The thread size. Good thing late ML started here on Wednesday or I probably wouldn't have thought of it.
