R-25 and it's magazine
« on: December 14, 2009, 12:32:55 PM »
I purchased one and have been please so far with only about 40 rounds through it at the 25 yard indoor range.  I put on a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14X40 mounted in Warne mediums for a nice low profile.  I'm eager to take it to the outdoor range soon.  One thing I didn't like is the 4 round magazine, especially since there are no magazine capacity rules in Louisiana.  Not that I need 10 rounds to hunt with, it beats carrying a few extra rounds in your pocked with 3 in the magazine.  I just thought I would let everyone know you can take the factory magazine apart in a couple minutes and remove the plastic "limiters" and turn the 4 round magazine into a 10 round magazine.  Of course I didn't discover this until after I ordered additional 10 and 20 round magazines.

I always say to each his own but why in Gods name would you want to carry 10 rounds in a clip to deer hunt?  I don't think I could shoot that many times at a deer unless it's a "spray and pray" shot.  I know many folks take extra rounds.  I have a friend that takes 10-15 rounds everytime he hunts.  In 20 years I have known him he has at most 4 shots.

I think I am carriing too much with my three rounds.

Just my 2 cents.

I want one but it just isn't high enough on my list to be next.  I eagerly await more news of your experience.

Well, I like to bring 6 rounds or so with me normally.  This means a magazine and 2-5 rounds in my pocket.  Not just for the deer, we currently we have a bad hog problem too.  I like to have a few extra "just in case".

I hear ya on the hogs.  This friend I am talking about went on a hunt on a management area in North Alabama and killed a 200 lb boar.  He said he walked up on about 30+ hogs.  North Alabama is about to get run over with the hogs.

I did the "15 minute trigger job" on it last night.  I now have a nice smooth 4 lb. trigger.  I can't wait to shot it again.

WOW talk to me about the 15 minute trigger job......Any info would be appreciated. The gun is awesome and a trigger job would only make it more so.....

Bayou Stalker, I wonder if you know whether or not the stock on the  R-25 can be swapped for a collapsible one?

Oh well,  no reply from bayou stalker.  I purchased the R-25 in .243 and absolutely love it.  It is a bit heavy to carry around for long periods of time, but the first trip to sight in, (Nikon ProStaff camo 3X9X40) with factory Rem 100gr ammo easily shoots under an inch at 100 yds.   I imagine it can shoot better with someone less shaky than me, but for coyotes/hogs/varmits, it shoots well enough.   Wonderful shooting rifle.

We have a lot of ferral dogs in our area.  I know of a police officer who was turkey hunting and got attacked by a pack of about 5 dogs.  He shot 3 times out of his Rem 11-87 and the third shot hit the lead dog, a pit bull mix, and the others scattered, so he quickly reloaded and came out of the woods.  This was just west of Auburn.  I always carry a magazine load in my rifle, but also carry a handgun, usually a 44 mag or my 1911 45.  We have also had some rabid animals occationally and coyotes which are legal to shoot year round.  Always carry more for the unexpected.

Dixie Dude, I agree with the idea of carrying extra ammo.  As the saying goes, better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.   I've come across feral dogs too many times over the years at my leases.  They nearly always show aggression, growling, and or barking.  One circled around to get behind me one time, and three times while hunting dogs showed up either after the shot, or chased deer I was about to draw my bow on.  I too always carry a sidearm, whether or not I have a sotgun or rifle, or even a bow with me.
