30-30 to 30-40 krag
« on: December 14, 2009, 03:13:15 AM »
i bought my so a 30-30 awhile back.we used it hunting this year an found it to be just like its name implies.(handi)my son shot his first deer this year with it.now im thinking i want one for myself, but i think i would like to ream it to 30-40 krag.what does the krag compare to,is like the 308 performance wise.and for the guys who have already done this hows the accuracy after the ream job.my sons 30-30 shoots like a laser,it shoots the win power points an rem core locs to same place.i shot a 1/2 2 shot group at 98yrds using 1 rem an 1 win.how much will the synthetic forarm lighten the barrel end cause thats the only promlem we encountered was when it was slun over our shoulders it would start to slide down.im starting to like these old calibers,i bought a marlin 336 in 35 rem an love it but as you all know you cant have enough guns.thanks Kawie ;D

Sling it muzzle down like the old timers did.  The Krag is one of my favorite calibers.

Leave it alone, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  I can find no good reason to do this conversion unless that's just what you want.  30-30 will do most everything that the 30-40 can do except with the real heavy bullets @200gr. and larger. bill439

Both are good. Get another barrel and do the Krag ;D

Look at what you want. The Krag is closer to an 06 and if you need the extra power...or just want something unusual, go for it.

If you are concerned about the cost and availability of brass, keep the 30/30.

If  you are a reloader, the extra oomph with heavier bullets and romance of the old Krag are good arguements.  If you are not a reloader, Krag ammo is 2-3times more expensive and much harder to find and may not offset the difference in performance over the 30-30.  I ask because you noted the use of factory ammo in your 30-30 barrel, if you don't reload, the Krag gets expensive and difficult to feed.  I do love the krag, but reload for it only.

If you indeed reload, there's another possibility ......

When you rechamber to the Krag, do the Ackley Improved version .....  ;D

That'll definitely be an unusal cartridge, but also give you the power of a "rimmed" .30/06!  Including most of that long neck on the Krag case - great for holding those long heavy bullets!  Nothing in tjhe lower-48 you couldn't hunt with that rig.

Leave the 30-30 alone and get a 308 or 30-06 barrel and another frame , stock  etc, the addiction will go and go just like the energizer bunny ;D

The .30-40 Krag has a rim to headspace on.  That's a real advantage over the .308 or .30-06.  I don't feel that the AI cartridges offer much in this day and age.  Just my 2 cents.......

I love mine. I do reload so can use all kind of bullets. i shoot 170 grain lasercast @1700 fps for
grouse and target. 150 accubonds for whitettail at 2700 fps. 220 hornady round noses @ 2100 fps
in case I see a big pig or decide to switch from archery for elk. With a williams sight I can put the 170 grain
and the 220 grain in the same 3" bull at 100 yards at the same sight setting, or move the setting to
another notch and use the 150 grains bullets. With the synthetic stock it weighs just 6.5 lbs and carrys
nice with my hand able to reach all the way around at the balance point. Not much you can't hunt with
a krag in NA.

The 30-40 Improved is one of the best improved cases you can do for performance increases with almost a 20% gain.

Getting 2900 fps out of a 180grn 30-40 Krag sounds interesting.  That's nipping at the heals of 300 win mag performance.

How is that possible with so much less case capicity?

I don't know, but that's what the chart in the link says.  That would have to thump in a nice little synthetic stocked Handi.

I have to agree with Tim on this, i've shot an ackley imporved 30-40 since the mid 60's and can vouch for its accuracy as well as performence. I've gotten 1/2 inch groups with 165 sierra's @ 2995 out of a 24" barrel and had many one shot kills. One at 350 yards + on a huge mule deer in Utah.

Here's a visual comparison of the 30-40, 30-40AI and 30-06.

In the mid-1980's I had a Ruger #3 carbine custom barreled to 30-40 krag. My hunting load was a 180 gr. spitzer and I used IMR-4350 powder. This load clocked above what a .308 would do. I shot many Deer & Elk with this piece.

The 30-40 really comes alive in a single shot rifle. ;)

When I get a 30-30 Handi barrel it's getting punched out to 30-40 krag.

FW Conch i like the way you think i also would love to have the 250 an 300 savage.as far as slingin the gun barrel down i dont like that cause as we all know the woods arent flat an a slip could be a barrel full of mud or snow especialy with a 11yr carrying the gun.i dont reload now but this spring im going to get everything to reload for 30-30,35rem an30-06.but for the most part i just want something different.were i live in PA ive never come across anyone useing the krag.plus my local walmart stocks it so someone must use it lol ;D
thanks Kawie
