357 Questions
« on: December 13, 2009, 09:20:45 AM »
While Wayne York has my 22 Hornet barrel, which will at some point be turned into a 25 Remington  :), I have been thinking  ??? about other projects that I may now finally have the money to pursue. I noticed (FAQ) that the twist rate of 357 Magnum barrels is either 1 in 18 and 3/4 in. or 1 in 15 and 1/2 in.

If I order a 357 barrel now, does anyone know what the twist rate of a new barrel will be?

And, if I have a 357 barrel reamed to a 356 Win., will the twist rate be fast enough to stablize a bullet of at least 220 grains? As an aside, if I decide to go through with this project, I plan on having the barrel cut to 20 inches and have the extractor changed to an ejector.

I guess I am assuming that a 357 barrel can successfully be reamed to 356 Win.

Thanks,
Jeff

The barrel can be rechambered with no problems, my older 357Mag>357Max>35Rem barrel is a 1:15½", shoots 240gr cast bullets just fine at 2000fps, the 1:18" may not, I don't know when it was made, but I bought it used over 5yrs ago. FWIW, my RMEF 35Whelen is 1:16", it shoots 250gr spitzers great at 100yds, never shot it beyond that, if that helps.  ;)

Not sure I can answer any of your questions but I have to ask one of my own :D

What's the difference between a 356 Win and a 358 Win (which I am more familiar with)?

I do believe that I've been told you may have issues with the 357 mag/max twist not being fast enough for heavier bullets - in fact I was considering posting a question to find out if other 357 max users have experienced any accuracy decrease with 180gr bullets vs 158s.  My 357 max seems to shoot the lighter bullets slightly more accurately, which would lead me to believe that it might not handle 220 grain very well

Rimmed case.

Great cartridge.  Too bad it never really caught on...

The 356Win is basically a rimmed 358Win.

In my 11th edition of Cartridges of the World it says the nominal twist rate for the 356win is 1-12. So the 1-18 twist rate may not be suffecient enough to stabilize the 220 grain from the 356win.

If it were me I would look at getting a 30-30 barrel and have it rebored and chamber for the 356win.

The Lilja twist rate chart lists 16" twist for 220gr, as with many 35 Whelen reports, the shorter 250gr RN will shoot fine, while 250gr spitzers may not, it just depends on bullet length.

Thanks for the information everyone.

I thought about having a 308 barrel rechambered and rebored, but I was trying to avoid the expense of reboring.

I have a 357 barrel now and have been shooting mostly 180gr. and 200gr. BTB's in it, but I haven't been able to find the sweet spot for it yet. I am hoping as I shoot it more, the accuracy will improve.
