7x57 Mauser
« on: December 12, 2009, 12:13:16 PM »
I have got a 7x57 Handi that I purchased a few months ago for $199.The prefix on the frame is NL which would make it a 1997 model.I havent had a chance to do anything with it yet due to hectic work schedule , but things are slowing down a lil because of winter and I came finally play with some of my toys. What would yall suggest as a good starting point for working up a good load? I have been looking at optics for on it and think I have settled on a Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32.I think this scope would go good with the sleek lines of the Handi.

That's a great price, congrats! I've only shot one powder and bullet in mine, RL19 under a 140gr Nosler Ballistic Silvertip without any work on the forend which is real obvious from my 3rd round!!  ;D That's a ½gr over Nosler data, but I load to a longer COL, 3.191" which is .010" off the lands, Nosler data is at 3.065".

I always had good luck in my various 7X57's using one of the 4350 powders, mostly IMR but Hodgdon is slower and if using 150 and heavier might do better.  I liked the 139-140 gr bullets in mine.  Good luck with yours, wish I could find one for sale.  DP

You should have fun with that. I think that is one of those outsourced guns ???
I was thinking of putting one of those scopes on my Ruger Hornet. I looked at one yesterday at a gunshop and it seemed to me to have a very limited spot of eye relief. >:( I had been to the eye doctor before I went there but I would still recomend you look through one before purchasing it ;) I'm learning that the hard way with ordering scopes. :'(  Good Luck!

Sorry to be the one that tells you this, but that's all the better those 7x57s ever shoot. ::)  It might be best to just post it in the classifieds. ;D Better yet, send me a PM just before you post it.......LOL  ;D ::)

Just kidding, it's a great old caliber to have in a Handi.  It is very much sought-out and you got a great deal on it.

Thanks, Dinny

I will get some RL19 and give it a try.Hopefully mine will be a shooter.

I have got some IMR 4350 and will try woring up a load using it.I thought about trying a 130gr bullet and see what I can come up with.

You are right it is on one of the out sourced frames but that makes no difference to me. All my Handis are on dedicated frames right now. As far as the burris scope I have looked at one before and I didnt have any problems the eye relief on it.But nothing is written in stone yet.I'm gonna put my bushnell 3-9x40 on it for load development while I decide on which scope I want for it.

Dinny,

You may be more correct in saying that's the way I always shoot!!  :-\ ::) :D ;D  It would be nice if H&R would make another run of them, or at least make em available as accessory barrels as they did with the 357mag and 450Marlin for a long time.  ;)

It sure would Tim. Along with a whole other list of calibers I would love to see them offer.

H 414 is THE powder for the 7x57.
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Only Handi so far is a 375 JDJ.

The company has been sold now and all previous agreements are dissolved. I tell you this before I tell you what is next. For a good number of years the investment cast frames for H&R were cast for them under contract by Ruger in New Hampshire. They were and are very strong and very high quality....<><....:)
