Sold the Glock & Bought the Smith 686
« on: December 08, 2009, 01:33:58 PM »
Well I got my askin price for the Glock 21, and went and picked up the Smith 686 2 1/2 inch. When I got home I stripped it down and did an action job on it, and will shoot it in a few days to see where it shoots. The action cleaned up nice, and I noticed the side plate fits a little tighter than the used to. It will better serve my needs as I get older, and I can tear down my Dillon progressive and set it up exclusively for 38 special and 357 mag. This other than a little Buckmark Browning 22lr is the only caliber pistols in my house now, and I am glad. I also have a lever in the caliber so, I am good to go, and satisfied.

Good choice, I am a life long fan of S&W's and 357's. My first duty gun, back in the dark ages, was a 6 inch Highway Patrolman. Wish I still had it.     Doug

Good choice, not a whole lot that can not be done with the 357 caliber handgun.

canon6, my first duty gun was Diamondback Colt 4", and I wish I had it back also. Then I discovered the Model 19 Smith. I went back and forth from auto to 357 mag for the next 18 years, with about a fifty-fifty split between 1911s and 357s.
The 686 I have carried before in a 4", and I know the gun. This one a 2 1/2" will do double duty as a carry and a field gun, and like StrawHat said. It will do anything I need to do.

Dee,  like you I  went the auto, revolver merrygo round for most of 40 years. I still have one semiauto(KelTec P11) , but my favorite 357 is my S&W model 13, 3 inch round butt, blued. I sure wish I  had bought a truck load of them , ::)       Doug

That 13 was a great gun. Smith I think missed the boat on stopping some of the old models. I carry my Model 60 every day, and it is the best to hide.

Dee, you know I like my Glocks, but there's just something special about a Smith revolver.  I have three: 36 2", 26 3", and a 66 4".  All were carried by my father while on duty at one time or another so all have a very special place in my heart.  If not for that little 2", I probably wouldn't have had him around growing up.  I shot the 66 in IDPA recently and did ok.  Surprisingly, while my speed was ok, my accuracy suffered.  I'd love to have a 625 so I could shoot in a different class, but that's an extreme want considering what I already have.  Anyway, I'm sorry you got rid of the Glock, but glad you got what you want.

When my father started passing his guns on to me his only stipulation was that I couldn't get rid of any of them.  I think I'll heed his wishes.  Mainly because he wants to shoot them when he comes to visit and I've learned don't anger an ex-cop who knows how to shoot!

When our outfit went to autos they gave us the option to keep our 6 shooters, I did. Most times we qualified we usually had some sort of fun match too, like dueling plates etc. Before the switch I wasn't much of a contender in these matches, we had some good shots in the bunch. After the switch all of a sudden I was winning more than my share.

Great choice with the 686. I have 2 of them, though  with 4 " and 6" barrels.

I had a friend shoot the 6" at the range, after I did the action, and changed the springs, and the rear sight blade.
His first shot went through the x ring at 50 yards, and so did the next 2 shots. The range officer immediately tried to buy the gun.  :D

I have the blue one -586 , it was a police trade in for $ 249.00 . It was a spare gun and looks almost new . No holster wear .
We have 2 companies here that deal with police and we see alot of traded in guns at great prices . Now it is mostly autos but still some good deals . It is a sight to walk into a store and the cases are filled with one model gun though .
