527M in 7.62x39!!
« on: December 07, 2009, 04:26:01 PM »
I have had a couple of 527's in 222 and never hung on to them...usually sold them after coyote season...not my first pick for deer hunting. I was at my local fun shop and they had one of these lil carbines in stock in 7.62x39 and I have been looking for smaller rifles here lately because I have been taking alot of kids deer hunting (took 4 kiddos and they have killed 9 deer) I think this lil rifle is gonna be the ticket for kids...most of our hunting stands are less than 100 yard shots. I bought it and put a 2x7 Weaver classic scope on it...then got to looking for ammo...found some Russian SP's and hps in the gun cabinet and actually found some Remington Express Sp's at Wally World...just won't get to shoot it till Friday or Sat. Who uses Russian ammo for deer? What are you guys using ? Thanks Robbie

I have a friend that has one of these but he isn't a hunter. He shoots some Privipartisan in it, not sure if you fellow can buy this ammo in the USA, I believe it is manufactured in Hungary. A cheap alternative to the  American made products. He says it groups just fine in his carbine. FS

Check the 6.5 Grendel web sites. There is a gun smith that rebarrels these to 6.5 Grendel.

Puts the 527 into a whole new league. Would be ideal for a younster's first deer rifle.

Do you know if that gunsmith does a 6.8 SPC?

Sorry, I don't know that. The conversion to 6.5 Grendel is straight forward due the case head being the same diameter. Not sure that the 6.8 case head is close enough for the extractor to snag.

I'll look tomorrow to see if I can find the name for you.

Brockman's Rifles has been authorized by Alexander Arms to provide conversions of the CZ527 7.62x39 to 6.5 Grendel. The cost of this program is $400.00 with the customer providing the rifle.

If you do not have a CZ527, a complete rifle is also available $900.00.

Send an email to brockman@brockmansrifles.com or call 208-934-5050

Here is a picture of what a completed rifle would like... of course, scope and rings not included but are available.

Current Delivery Time on complete rifles is 45-60 days.

Brockman isn't doing conversions on CZ's at this moment...I talked to a lady their and said that they had too much business to do a conversion on CZ...said that they are 18 months out on his leveraction customs...Kinda sucks...I was wanting him to do my conversion...I have emailed several people about doing one and nobody has answered me...I don't know who to use.. You can get a 6.5 Grendel barrel for the CZ 527 from Lothar Walther. Then have any good gunsmith fit it.

The russian HP is more of a FMJ than an HP.
I would use the SP.  I have seen some of the Wolf stuff loaded with 150 grain and 123 grain Soft points.
Either will work well for deer.

Here is my CZ 527 American Sporter in 7.62x39. Was "gonna" rebarrel it to 30PPC or 6.5 Grendel but shot it first as a 7.62x39 and decided I like it just the way it is!
My longest standing position shot/kill on a deer was with a 7.62x39 out of an SKS with a 4X scope- 125 yards. I could not kneel because of the tall broom grass so a standing shot was all I had. I had loaded some 150gr Nosler BTs and the small doe was a quick kill.
My CZ looks much better than that old SKS.

Here is my CZ 527 American Sporter in 7.62x39.

alan, is that the original stock? Is the rifle difficult to aim, considering the shape of the stock? Isn't the butt too low for aiming with a scope?
By the way, where are the original metallic sights?

I'll answer for him if he don't mind, That is the American model it the stock looks factory, it dosen't come with sights, the rifle comes ready to use with a scope.

It is a CZ 527 Carbine barrelled action in 7.62x39. I removed the barrel and turned off the rear open sight base in a lathe and then reinstalled right back where it was [made witness marks before removing, as always]. The front sight is both glued and screwed [one] on and is easily removed. Then I fit the slimmed down barrel w/action into a CZ 527 American Sporter stock I had left over from another barrelled action 'switch'. This fancy walnut donor stock origionally came from the factory as a .221 FireBall. Most of the early release FireBalls had super nice select walnut stocks. Most of those might be gone now. My .221 got a Kevlar stock, then after a Montana gopher trip as a .221FB, I pulled the .221FB barrel and fit a PacNor Stainless Super Match 3 groove barrel and chambered it to 17 Mach IV, a minimal spec reamer being used-but that's another story.

ANYWAY, back to the CZ 7.62x39. The 'American Sporter' stock it is in now has a higher comb that is perfect for scope use. The origional Carbine stock has a lower comb meant to allow use of both the open sights or a scope.
Here is a picture of the small flat spot on my 7.62x39 barrel where 'most' of the rear open sight base was removed. Just a smidgen of the dovetail flat was left as it is not seen unless closely examined.
I don't think CZ offers the 7.62x39 in the American Sporter stock, so this little package is pretty neat in my opinion. While I had the barrel in the lathe I dialed in the bore to true and recrowned it.

I need to take another picture of it as it now has a Leupold 4X scope mounted and looks 'balanced', which it is!

Ha! Well, actually you are right. If CZ DID make an American in 7.62x39, this is what it would be, all except the tiny flat spot where the remnant of the rear sight is.
I think a lot of them would have sold.
Turning off the 'dog knot' allows the barrel to nicely fit in an American model stock. I did NOT want to have to open up the forend of the nice stock for that ugly rear sight!
I'll see about a picture of this rifle with the Leupold fixed 4X. If I used this rifle a lot for hunting I would mount my favorite "hunting" Leupold on it, the 2.5-8X Matt VX III.

I have a Nikon 2.5x7 on mine and it works really well with the rifle and cartridge, I took mine out hunting whitetails once this year but it scared the deer so much they wouldn't come out of hideing. ::)

The deer were probably there, you were just admiring your rifle the whole time and missed seeing them as they paraded by! ha!

By the way, when I hunted with a 7.62x39 in an SKS [semi auto] rifle, I would pull military style FMJ bullets OUT of the steel cased ammo, and seat/crimp a 'Quality' aftermarket soft point copper jacketed bullet such as those offered by Speer, Hornady, etc. I purchased a LEE Factory Crimp die and it worked GREAT. I never removed the factory ammo powder charge. I just switched bullets. Initially I did this to keep from crying when the SKS would SLING my empty brass [reloadable] cases 40 feet to the right, off into the weeds and brush never to be found again. The non-reloadable military type ammo is no loss when it gets slung out into never never land.
I'm going to do the same for my CZ 527 "American" because I'm not too keen on shooting the steel jacketed/copper washed bullets that Wolff has in their ammo, at least thru my chrome moly barrel withOUT chrome lined bore as the SKS had.
