DISMAL AT BEST!
« on: December 07, 2009, 03:56:02 AM »
Is all I can say about results of a short 80 yard bench session yesterday. Yes I did say bench (I wish it were 500 yards offhand!) Shot 14 rounds loaded with 11gr. of Unique with 405 cast teeth. I was hoping to get the new Malcolm scope adjusted but after the second shot(14" spread..no adjustment) was more intriqued with the scatter. I sure have a nice benchmark for improvement! I know I have issues with the forend, it is bearing HARD on the left only. In hindsight, I wish I had removed the forend for the last few shots. This is what makes it fun! It can ONLY get better.

You're shooting a known good target load so look at bases and scope. The forend needs fixing but that's not going to give you that kind of spread. Most likely the scope or you. I can't figure out what you mean by "cast teeth".

If it were me, first thing I'd do would be check the bullet diameter as compared to the bore slug - very little effort to do that.

EDIT:  Oops, checked your post history and it looks like you have bullet dia. well in hand.

Another thing easy to check is standing breech/barrel gap on closeing. I have one that showed no light or wiggle but it would close with an .008 shim in between the barrel and breach. It scattered but not that bad. eddiegjr

I call bullets "teeth". Aside from the forend, I have several issues to work on. One snuck up on me last night. I had loaded a dozen Unique loads 15 years ago for my double rifle but had forgotten where I recorded the load data. For some reason I remembered 17grains(not good!). Not knowing the actual load, I started pulling bullets and dumping powder/malt-O-meal filler. These are 13 year old 405 grain, gas checked bullets cast by Green Bay Bullets (and the same cast bullets I loaded earlier for the pic posted). Several of the gas checks stayed in the case revealing the base of the bullet. I was somewhat shocked to see huge voids in most of the bullet bases and none in others. I'll bet there are 50+ grains of variation between some of these bullets. Another issue....I looking at my loads as I was shooting and noticed they seemed skewed in the case. It looks to me like they were really "forced" thru the sizer as there is a substancial top punch mark that appears to have actually displaced the bullet nose in one direction. I did not notice this as I was loading, but in looking at the remianing few bullets in the box, see the same issue. I have some Lyman 457122's coming and will load up some for round two after floating the forend.

If your bullet is moving forward at 1000 fps out of a 22 inch twist barrel, your bullet is spinning at close to 22,000 revolutions per second which is close to 1.32 million RPMs....  bad bullets with irregularities, especially anything that is off the centerline will play havoc with accuracy.

H&R 45-70s are 1:20" twist, so it's spinning even faster.  ;)

One of us is not cipher’n properly…..probably me!

I get:  1000ft/sec =12,000inches per second( at the muzzle)
12,000 inches divided by 22” = 545.5 revs per second
545.5 revs per second times 60 seconds(per minute) = 32,727 revs per minutes (at the muzzle)

Looks like my attempts at iron sight pistol shots at 50 yards!

We all have bad days, but that's a bit annoying to find out about those bullets!  That would definitely cause havoc on the accuracy of the load.

Things are looking up! I loaded up some of the 350gr Lyman 457122's in conjuction with forend work and these are the results. Per excellent advice on this forum, I spaced the forend off the barrel with washers. I used AN960-516L aircraft washers(because I had them). These washers are .035-.040 thick which makes for fine adjustment when stacking. I also used the 1/4-20 setscrew trick in the forend stud(off this forum as well). This completely relieves the barrel of any forend stresses. Considering it was 15 degrees and blowing fairly strong, I was happy with the results. At about the 5th shot my thumb and trigger finger were numb. If anyone wants 1/2 a dozen of the aircraft washers PM me....all I ask is a SASE to cover postage. Keep shoot'n!
