SRH 454 scope/site mounting
« on: October 22, 2003, 03:03:35 PM »
Anyone have any experience with weaver-style mounting system designed especially for the SRH 454 by Jack Weigand?  I am going to use a red dot, and would like to get the bigger 30-40mm sizes which don't allow for the use of Ruger's factory rings.

It can be found here:  http://www.jackweigand.com/srh.html

The version for the 454 requires the rear sight to be removed but looks like it is a nice design.  Does it contact the gun frame in such a way that it might cause some wear?

Any other comments?

You can order 30mm rings from Ruger, but noting bigger. I have a 30mm red dot on my Redhawk. :)
If  you're going to make a hole, make it a big one.

If you haven't opened the factory ring package yet, you can send them back to Ruger for an even exchange on any of their other rings. I returned my 1" rings and had Ruger send me a set of 30mm SS rings so that I could mount a 30mm Ulta Dot on my SRH 454. Note, however, that Ruger does not make a set of 30mm rings in the Target grey finish. I settled for regular SS.

While the Weigland mount looks good, it requires you to remove the rear sight. I wanted to be able to remove the red-dot sight periodically and use the revolver in my holster. This made the Weigland too impractical for my intended use. Just something about the SRH revolvers that sais they should be open sighted and holstered. We've got Contenders and the like for scope mounting and sling carry.

The nice thing about the Weigland is that it will allow you to use several quality sights that do not fit in Ruger rings, like the Nikon, Burris or Leupold/Gilmore red-dot sights.

I suggest you get a steel mount for the 454.
Get steel rings also.   Look at Warne if not using Rugers.
