Last Minute WV Buck (240 yard shot)
« on: December 06, 2009, 01:50:47 PM »
I was back down for the last day of doe season and ranged the distance I shot the buck. 240 YARDS!!!!

I went to our property in WV (15 miles from Cabelas) Saturday morning for the last day of buck season. I saw five doe and around 4:20 Danny said lets go watch the big open field since deer always come out in it at dust. We’re standing watching the field and a doe comes out probably 350+ yards As we’re watching it with the binoculars I saw another deer in the woods behind the doe at 400 yds. I kept watching it and Danny says three does walked out about 200 yards from us. About the time Danny said the does walked out I saw HORNS on the deer I was watching. All of a sudden the buck took off running towards the does. When he got to the does, I laid down on the ground with the 309JDJ Contender with a Harris Bipod on it. I found him in the scope and he was heading towards the road following a doe. He was probably 20 yards from the road (to close for me to shoot) and a truck comes by and he took off towards the woods away from the road. He stopped probably 70 yards from the road and 20 yds from the woods broadside! BIG MISTAKE! I shoot, MISSED! Danny says shoot again, I held the crosshairs on the top of his back and shot again. I swear he jumped a foot in the air and took off across the road. We walked down to where he was standing and found the first bullet mark in the snow. We keep looking and can’t find any blood. Found where he crossed the road and kept following the tracks in the snow. Danny finally found a small spot of blood 25 yards into the woods. I had a sickening feeling since it was 4:50 and light was disappearing fast until I looked 10 yards and saw him lying against a tree. I don’t know who was more EXCITED, Danny or me. We’re guessing the buck was 250-300 yards away. Danny was going to go back to the farm with a range finder today to check the distance but I haven’t heard from him. My 309JDJ is 2 inches low at 200 yds and I held on the top of his back. The Nosler 165 BT exited in the middle of the left front shoulder and left a 1.5 inch hole.

I'm surprised we didn't see more bucks this season. Check out the bucks I got on the trail camera. 9'th picture is a bobcat.

Jay,

I'd sit there even if I didn't see any deer :D  That's one of the best views from a stand I've seen  :D  Slow season for many compared to previous years.  Best of luck next year.
