Which .25-06?
« on: October 22, 2003, 12:10:29 PM »
I have about decided that I need a .25-06 to round out my battery.  I have a 7mm-08, a .30-06, and a .45-70 on it's way.  I don't care anything much for magnums Per Se.

I am leaning presently toward a Steyr Pro Hunter with the 23.6" bbl.  I have also taken a look at a Tikka 695 (I think)  It was stainless with a gray laminated stock.  I don't know how long the barrel was on the Tikka, but it seems like they used to be in the neighborhood of 22".

It has been awhile since I handled one of the Steyr rifles, but I liked what I saw in both of the rifles I handled.  The money should be about the same,  I wonder what you guys think.

I have pondered the Sendero also, but I am afraid that since I do more still hunting than stand hunting, I would use it little.  I think I want something of a standard sporter weight, neither ultralight, nor heavy barreled.

I would think the Tikka would fit the bill nicely.  But there are an awful lot of choices out there.  Good luck deciding.

If I were to get a long range round, I think I would go with a barrel that fits the round.  Like a 24" to a 26" barrel.

I agree that a 26" barrel would be the way to go with the .25-06, but in production rifles the only one I can think of, off the top of my head is the Ruger No. 1B.  Maybe that wouldn't be so bad, but I am not sure I want to go with a one shooter.

I have a Tikka Laminated Stainless in .25-06 and it shoots great!  Just so you know, it has a 22 3/8" barrel.

Another choice would be a Remington 700 BDL SS.  It has a full 24" barrel and you have a wide array of options for aftermarket stocks if you want.

Like already mentioned the Remington Sendero is a real tack driver and i think it's a great gun for bench shooting or shooting off a bipod but it is really on the heavy side for hunting or carrying around.  I have one right now in the classifieds that i'm trying to sell thats just sitting in my gun safe because of it's weight it doesn't see much use.  For a hunting rifle i'd go with a lighter rifle no doubt. I'm currently dealing with guy locally who has a Remington Classic 25.06 and a Sako 75 Hunter 25.06 new in the box in his safe that he wants to part with and i'm hoping one of them will be mine soon.  I've always bought and owned Remington rifles but i have a friend who has owned Sako's all his life and he has always had nothing but good things to say about them and i'd really love to have one so i'm trying to get the Sako but i would be happy with either one.

Joel,

I have been shooting the .25-06 since 1964 when I built my first.  It was a wildcat cartridge back then.  It this time I got three in my safe, a Ruger No.1B that is working out nicely(you would be surprise at how fast you can chamber a new round), a Ruger M77V(varmint model with a 26" barrel(older model with a tang safety and made in 1976)) that is one of the most accurate rifles I own.  Groups under 3/4" are standard.  My last one is a Remington M700 Varmint(also made in 1976 with a 26" barrel and before Remington got rid of their customer service department) and while it's accuracy isn't up to the Ruger M77V is does shoot under MOA any given day of the week.  Granted both of my bolt action .25-06's are on the heavy side(both are very near the 10 lb. mark with scopes) for most people but they are what I like.  If you are looking for a .25-06 with a 24" barrel then look at the Winchester M70 Featherweight or the Ruger M77 II as both come standard with 24" barrels and both weight just over 7 lbs.....  My advice to you is try all the rifles you can until you find the one that fits you then get it in the caliber you want.  Lawdog

First of all , I think you made an excellent choice in cal.  I have always wanted a 25-06 and About a week ago I found one brand new in the bo in a rem mtn rifle.  One word : AWSOME.  I sighted it in the day I bought it and shot a deer the next day.  It is truly a pleasure to shoot.  Whatever you choose I am sure you will be happy.  Good luck,  Brandon

Thanks to all who replied.  I looked high and low around here and finally found a .25-06.  It is a remington 700 BDL.  This one has no keys that go with it, and is an engraved version.  It has two small nicks at the muzzle that worry me a little.  I am afraid that I might have to have it re-crowned.  I haven't brought it home yet because just before I foudn this rifle, I ran up on basically the same thing at another shop chambered for 270.  I have never owned a 270, but I know of its reputation.  I have already mentioned that I have a 30-06, a 7mm/08, and now a 45-70.  I wonder which rifle/chambering will fill the gap better.  The money is about the same for both rifles, and if I had to say which is in better shape, I would say the 270 because of the nicks on the muzzle of the 25-06.  What say you?

Joel,
Buying one rifle because the other has a problem is like buying a 3/4 ton truck over a 1/2 ton truck because the 1/2 ton has a flat tire.

1st figure out what you really want.  2nd go buy it.  3rd don't take substitutes or other than what you decided on

It dosen't cost that much to have some nicks in the crown repaired.  And you don't really know if the accuracy is affected.

My 2 pennies

Checking the used gun market is a good idea, there are tons of "Gently Used" guns out there that were closet/safe queens for years.  A buddy of mine recently (right after Christmas) found a nearly-new Interarms Mark X in 25-06, 23" barrel, gorgeous wood, incredible blueing.  We're still testing loads, but last week I coaxed a 3-shot group out of it that measured .24".............at 200 yards!  It might have been a fluke, we'll find out tomorrow, further testing with the Sierra 120 SP.  But we're off to a good start!
