Special Order Caliber???
« on: December 05, 2009, 08:43:16 PM »
Let's see if there is enough consensus to bring 200 people into one "range" of calibers!  Perhaps then 200 could find a way into one cartridge! ;)  There is no scientific reasoning to my diameter breakdown, I just thought of some reasonable breaks to get the poll going.

Don't you think it's going to follow the other on going poll ? I like the idea of trying, but I don't think you will ever get 200 votes for 1 caliber..

I thought it would at least give an idea of a "range" moreso than a caliber.  Are the guys here most interested in a small caliber or a large caliber, kind of thing.  With 100 views I would have thought they'd at least have taken the time to vote for a range....

Personally I think the small stuff is the thing, but lumping the 17's with the .22's just won't get it.  My bet is the really big stuff will win, but you will never in a thousand years get to 200 of anything.  Larry

I'm not buying any more firearms or barrels until primers and powders are back on the shelf in good selection and reasonable price(?). I am buying ammo, not tons but some. eddiegjr

23 votes out of 100 views - that's better than we get here on election day. ;D

I got only 137 votes out of 1446 views, so what does that tell you?

Frankly, I think this is just too open-ended for foks, but I applaude the effort regardless.

Just between you and me I would prefer a .25-35 over a .257 Roberts, but I am going with the numbers........

This thread is for caliber selection only, the Wish List in the FAQs is the place for other suggestions.

at least we are gettign some play!! I would but a 405 winchester in a heartbeat, and I would buy a 25-20  0r 25/35 in a minute also. I do not see however buying a modern high pressure bottleneck round in one. Period. I have a 243 that I may well trade for another caliber, it came with the original gun, that is the only reason I have it. I can buy a brand new Mossberg 30-06 or 270 Win at the local wally world for $259 plus tax. 4 shot bolt action, blued , synthetic stock, sling studs, etc. For less than 400 I can get a Weatherby Vanguard , or a Remington. The only reason for buying the Handi for me is the chamberings- there are no bolt action 45-70's that I have seen, no 444's, no 500 S&Ws, I would like to have a 375 winchester or a 38-55 barrel,  not any of them at the LGS. It is something different. Having a handi in a 30-06 for me would be like saying " I don't mind sleeping with a woman that everybody else has, and is poor, as long as she is also short and ugly". ( That should wake up a few  :-*)

I voted in the .32 cal. bracket for two reasons.  I would like a .327 Mag. My second choice would be a .32-20.  I'm leaning to a .32-20 over the 25-20 because it has the reputaion of being more accurate.  32 caliber, as a blanket statement, seems to just be an inherently accurate caliber.  My .32 muzzleloader will drive pins, not just tacks.

This sure doesn't look like the other poll with specific cartridges!  Given a choice it seems everybody is flocking to LARGER DIAMETERS!!

25-20 gives me a wide range of load options: from rabbits and squirrels, to the local swamp deer (about 100 pounds for a large one) , to coyotes and foxes. Plus it was designed for and shoots well with cast bullets.  And it is a rimmed cartridge, which work well in the break action Handi design. Who could ask for anything more?

See? I love my 45-70 BC, and with a 150 gr CB at 1200 fps it is not totally silly to shoot a rabbit, but the one squirrel I popped was near impossible to skin. With the 25-20 I can swamp hunt and still have a squirrel killer ready to go when the little suckers swarm all over me.
