Help, I messed up the gold finigh on a Centenial 66!
« on: October 22, 2003, 01:13:18 AM »
I was removing a surface scratch on the Brass receiver on a Winchester Centenial 66 lever rifle....the dry buffer wheel would not touch it so I loaded up the wheel with light jewlers rouge and promptly took the gold finish right off to the steel beneath.

Well am I emmbaressed   and stupid.  Guess I should have done this by hand and not on a wheel.  Compound the problem with the fact that this gun belongs to a freind, and this was a favor and I am pretty much an ass.

Bottom line I need to fix this problem.  I need to send to be refinished.

Winchester no longer "services that rifle".

Anybody got an idea?  I need to tell the owner about this asap but want to let him know what I am doing to fix it.

Any help out there?

Thanks

Other Manufacturers?

Hello HappyH

Have you tried other manufacturers that may have produced firearms with brass covered components?  They may be able to do the job for you or maybe provide recommendations.

Also, try posting on this forum ... http://www.shotgunworld.com/ ....  although they discuss mostly shotguns, they may have experienced or heard of similar circumstances and therefore may be able to offer some advice.

Finally, what about other companies that work with brass, just not with firearms?  The procedure may be the same or similar, and they may be able to help you out.

Hope this helps.
Chris

There are a couple of places that I know of that restore Winchester Commemoratives.

Good luck.

Thanks for your suggestions,

I sent gun to a factory authorized service center for U.S. Repeating Arms Co..  I spoke with the man that will be doing the work and felt that he will do a good job and that he has done this many times before.

After I get the gun back I will post  about the job done and give the companies name if work was satisfactory.

Thanks again for your help!
