Oil On The Latch/Shelf
« on: December 02, 2009, 01:58:23 PM »
I read it in in Handi Basics 101 and completely believe it causes a problem, but exactly how does oil on the latch/shelf cause accuracy problems?

Real simple, the lock up depends on friction between the latch and shelf, add oil and instant poor lock up.  THE number one fix for accuracy complaints reported by H&R gunsmiths at Gardner was "clean and dry catch",  only we've been calling it a latch so long it' would be confusing to switch!!  ;D

Agreed, just thing consistency, its key to so many shooting fundamentals.

Consistent lockup, consistant trigger pull, consistant for-end pressure, consistant screw torque, consistant cheek weld, consistant... Get the picture?  ;D

Thanks guys. The correlation between the catch and accuracy would never have dawned on me had I not read about it here. Again something very unique to these single shot rifles that you just never come across when dealing with accuracy issues of other rifles.
