Old Cane, you will have no problem dropping a deer with a 250 gr FN full house BP load. Out of a wheel gun you are looking at around 900 FPS
( depending on exactly how much BP was actualy stuffed in the case ).
Out of the rifle you are a little over a 1000 FPS and while considered a puny load packs a bigger wallop than expected. I have killed 3 deer with this load between 50 and 100 yards with a Rossi 92. All 3 shots were pass thru's and one shot kills. Up that bullet to 300 grains and you have one of Elmer Keiths pet 45 loads. He stated killing mule deer with that load from a sixgun with stem to stern penetration. I am talking full house BP here not the stuff loaded down by most people for the cowboy game for an easier to shoot load with less recoil from a sixgun. Hope this helps.
