Son's 2009 deer season with his Handi Rifle
« on: November 30, 2009, 05:53:07 AM »
Well, Indiana gun season closed yesterday.  This was the toughest season I have had in 2 decades :(  Warm/rainy weather, and standing corn sure put a damper on it.  Up til Sat., I had 1 doe and the boy ZIP!

They finally got to picking corn on Thanksgiving.  Dan was coming home to hunt the last weekend.  We were hoping to pull something out of the fire in the 11th hr.

Sat. dawned crystal clear, and no wind.  It was also the coldest morning of the season, with a nice frost on the ground.  Right at daylight, I popped a nice doe.  I then got to watch my son shoot a nice 8 pt., through my binocs.  Long story short, during the course of the day, my son shot a buck and 2 does.  All 1 shot kills with a 44 mag Handi and Hornady LE ammo.  He threepeated on the next to the last day of gun season! ;D  Here are a coupla pics of the day.

Dan's 8 pt. buck

Doe I popped at daylight with 1894 marlin, 44 mag., hornady LE ammo.

What a difference a day/year makes.  Last year we took 6 deer, in the 1st 3 days of the season.  This year we ended up taking 5 deer, but it took all season of hard/wet hunting.

Nice buck! And a geat rifle to boot,I mean rifles.
I've got an 1895 Marlin, so they're OK as well. ;D

We never had very cold weather up here either for the
whitetail season. It was  30 degrees when I shot my
buck, usually it's around 10.

It was a tough year for all of us here in S. IN too.  It appears that most of us got the job done, even tho it didn't look like we were. Maybe next year will be better.

Good shooting!

Congratulations on a great hunt at the end.  I only saw 4 deer all season....all 4 out of range for the .44 mag.  It's the first year in 20 I have not taken at least one with the rifle.  I still have half of December for ML and the rest for archery, so I'm sure I'll put something in the freezer.  I'm glad the LEs worked well for you; thats what I've been shooting.
