Starting point with a load?
« on: November 28, 2009, 05:23:41 PM »
I have a newer hutsman 360gr lee minie, atop pyrodex P, and 25acp CCI small rifle primers.

What is a good powder charge to start out with to work up a proper load, and what kind of drop am I going to see at ~50yrds?

I'd start at 80gr doubt you'll have much drop at 50 yrds your drop may not start till well after 50. Do the white sheet or snow trick to make sure your burnin all your powder then work up from there if ya think you need more smoke. Kurt

Just for interest you might want to check in on the breech plug modification for your Huntsman. I have the .25ACP plug and the newer breech plug (look for sticky information at the top) is way better. I know Pyrodex is not the present favorite but it will get the job done. Not sure about the heavier bullets in the Huntsman but I think if you are shooting less than 150yards it should be OK. Most seem to use 295gr. bullets.

I have both the .25acp and Hubbard 209 breech plugs for the huntsman.  I had the small rifle primers lying about, and I was willing the try the .25acp.  After 3 rounds (yeah not that much) I have had no issues with ignition.  I started the other day with 80gr of Pyrodex P, with the 360gr minnie's, and the rifle shoots dead on accurate at 50yrds.

Is there any reason to change back to a 209 primer in the Hubbard's plug, or if the .25acp is working... just stick to it?

What is the sheet test?

I have used the 25 acp in a coule of my guns and it works great.  The big push for the 209 was for people usng blackhorn powder as the 25 acp will not ignite it consistently.  If you plan to use pyrodex, you will be fine with the 25 acp.  I use small pistol primers in mine and have not had a problem.

You use a white bed sheet if you got no snow and I would suggest not one of the wifes good sheets. Place it out in front of you when you shoot and see if all the powder burns coming out of the bbl if it don't your using to much of that perticular powder. Kurt
