Interest in .500 S&W?
« on: November 22, 2009, 03:34:24 PM »
I'm new to the site and also to the world of Handis. I want to put together a .357 max for deer hunting and have found a .500 at a local shop at a decent price that I could rob a frame from. My question is : Are the .500 barrels in high enough demand that it will sell quickly (at a fair price of course), or will I be stuck with it? Thanks, and by the way.....GREAT SITE!!!!

Yes!

Take a look in the classified section and you'll see that for the most part they don't last long...
You might put the barrel out for trade too!

Welcome to your new addiction!!!   ;) ;)

Thanks!!! I think "addiction" may be the word for it. I am a gun nut anyway, and with the affordability of these little rifles I can see ALOT of them in my future.

why don't you just keep it, I bet you can get ammo for free (buddies buy a smith 500 and hurt their wrists and ears, sell the gun and give you the ammo)

also, it's probably THE cheapest 500 capable weapon on earth, think about it

Good point!!! I was hoping to put the money saved in the sell/swap of the barrel to purchase some reloading componets for the .357 max. Unless there happens to be a rabid rhinocerus on the loose in NC, I hope I won't need anything that big!!!

Bigbuckdown, Glad you finally signed up for this place. Cool and very informative huh? Let me know if you need any help with the max or the 500 mag. I just picked up a die set and some bullets today so I will have some loaded up and ready to shoot tomorrow. :)

Thanks man!!! I bet the .500 with some mild handloaded ammo would be easier on the shoulder and still be a real deer stomper. I have it bad for a .357 max right now, already have it built in my head. :) Once I get a set up we'll have to get together and do some shootin!!!!

I load pretty close to hodgdon's max 125gr hp load for H-110, it's really nasty (it puts .357 Magnum in a whole new class I assure you), try it and you might not think you need the "maximum" anymore  ::)  that said, I work at starline and I've talked to the one that did most of the data testing for the 500 S&W brass developement.  he blew up some cases and damaged some guns doing it so he knows the limits and from what he says at 900-1,000 it's really not painful or hard to hold with 375gr bullets (somewhere in that weight range).  500grs bullets kick going out slow but not horribly, and you're using a handi, a rifle not a handgun.  I honestly think you'll be alright with it downloaded... it's the loader's dream.  It CAN do anything and it can do it with slow moving low recoiling rounds usually too (mass over velocity-inertia).  I'm not the man but I talked to the man and his eyes glassed over when talking about what it can or can't do- horror stories and belly laughs and everything in between.  You're gonna be sorry if you sell it.

Thanks for the info Squib. You may have me talked into it. I don't reload, but my wonderful wife is getting me a Lee kit for Christmas if I'm a good boy. Reloading would definitely put the .500 in the "do everything" category. I guess it would be a mean 100 yd deer gun.

I will try to get the developer's personal data (assuming he actually kept it, and side notes for it too)

pm me once you get that gear set-up

I use a lee challenger, bought used from a guy that got it when clinton was in office (got scared and got prepared, never used the stuff and it was rusted), I busted the rust off and now it's fine, put 3,000 rounds through it maybe and still going strong

Thanks!! From what I've seen so far, this is the most informative site that I have ever seen on guns and shooting. I'm glad to finally be a part of it. I'm still on the fence about the "rhino gun" but you have have me thinking. Good shooting!!!  ;D

whoa, I'm not giving rhino advise

I don't know about big noses, just big mouths (rhino-nose)  ;D

seriously ask somebody else about "rhino guns"... (i know they're about blind so I'd shoot them from far away in the neck... but I bet that's not how people do it with a big bore rifle, especially when the good places to set up are probably inhabited by man-eating cats... )

I just checked Hodgdon's reloading site and they show some light loads using either Trail Boss or Titegroup powder for the .500. One load shows a 275 grain bullet running at 1170 fps with Titegroup. Another shows a 370 grain bullet running at 746 fps with Trail Boss. Those would be VERY mild out of a rifle, basically no kick at all yet plenty for whitetail at reasonable range. Check it out:
http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

The .357 is a great rifle but after seeing those loads I'd definitely keep the .500 instead.

There are two magazine articles on the 500 Handi in the FAQs, you'll behoove yourself to spend lots of time reading them as well as all other great info accumulated there over many years.  ;)
