Hog Hunting with 500 Handi??
« on: November 19, 2009, 01:58:59 PM »
Hello everyone. I was wondering what you guys thought about Hunting Hogs with the 500 Mag Handi??

I mean I know that I could load that gun up with a 700 Grain Trainstopper and take care of any hog on this planet.  My concern is using a single shot rifle for hunting hogs.....

What do you all think?  Would YOU feel comfortable hunting hogs with a 500 Handi???

You could probably kill a T-Rex with the 500. :D  I don't think hogs will be any problem. I'd use it. ;D

Well I say use it. you may only get one shot but if you do your part youll get at least one porker. A lever gunner or a semi auto shooter may get a second shot  but from my experience second shots are taken on the run and thats a crap shoot!

If you can place the round in the vitals it will put a hog on the ground. The 500S&W has a ton of energy and it will smack :P a porker down!26-t

Absolutely agree. Heck, we shoot them with .223s...talking about head shots over lighted feed barrels at night...but the 500? Deadly pig medicine. In fact, my best friend did shoot a pig on our lease with a 500 S&W 8 3'4" revolver at maybe 30-40 yards. The porker dropped immediately. Kicked up enough dust to fog the area for 20 yards around, but he stayed right where he dropped.

Thanks for all the responses.  Not exactly sure about the hog hunting thing, but for some reason it has peaked my interest!  Glad to know that what I got will get the job done!!

Brandon, it's like I always say "Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good."  The 500 will take down any porker on earth if you do your job.  A year or so ago I was called on to dispatch a rampaging domestic boar at a neighbors.  There were young kids involved and it could have become ugly.  When I was told it was 800 lbs plus, I grabbed my .45-70.  One in the head and it was over.  The .500 would have served as well.

I've killed several hogs with my 500 Handi. I shoot a 410 gr. LFNGC hardcast from Montana Bullet Works. I've never had to shoot one twice. ;)

I wouldn't have a problem hunting hogs with a single shot depending on the terrain and the type of hunting.  From a stand, a single shot would work just as well as anything else.  On foot in tight brush, I have used my 45-70 Handi backed with my .45acp Glock.  I have been in a situation where I have rounded a palmetto head to find myself within 20 yards of 30 hogs.  My dad actually had a heart attack in a similar situation while still managing to kill 3 of them.

Thanks again for the responses.  I think my 500 Handi would serve me well.  I can't imagine many animals on this planet being able to get up after a hit from a high grain, cast, 500 magnum round.  There's only one way to find out! :)

LOL.  Hogs fall to arrows, spears and just about anything else one can chunk or shoot at them.  They're not tanks.  Now go out and shoot something.  ;D

The mere fact that you asked that question shows you have concerns(and rightly so, especially where hogs are concerned!) with one shot being the stopper, if you would feel more confident with more shots, go with a repeater of some sort. No need to spend your hunts worrying about things, it's a time to be enjoyed. Tight quarters, dangerous game hunting is no place for a single shot gun, period! It is nothing more than flirting with disaster.

I've taken a bunch of hogs with Handis in .223 and .243.  I usually use an AR now, but the 500 would be a blast!  If you're worried about a hog charging or something like that, carry a backup pistol preferably one in a caliber that begins with a 4 (357 mag being the one exception).

I've gotten of 4 shots on a group of hogs before they got to the trees with the .243 (extractor).  I can go a little faster with the .223 (ejector).  The trick to hitting moving hogs is not to swing the gun like its a shotgun.  Pick a spot ahead of the hog that it will run through and when it crosses the crosshairs, let 'er fly.  I've dropped a lot of running hogs like that.  And a lower power scope helps a lot in this regard.

Dang, now I need another Handi.

Had the same thought and question myself.  Would love to go on one of those hunts down in Tejas where they have the hybrid Russian bore/feral pig monsters.  I have a couple of thumpers that would probably work, but I would love to unleash the 500.  You could always have a smith change the extractor over to an ejector for quick reloads if you were really worried about a follow up - could save you some important seconds anyway - but of course, shot placement the first time is everything.  The gun should have more than enough power to put one down, I would think.  ;)

Believe me, the 500 is more than enough for our Texas hogs.  As for ejector or extractor, either is fine.  The worst is when an ejector sticks and you can't get the shell out at all.  That's why so many prefer the extractor.  Even with my AR, I carry a back-up pistol on my hip.

Sounds great! Haven't shot my 500 yet.  Was gonna go out and shoot it yesterday but I realized that I was thoroughly unimpressed with the factory "iron" sights that came on the gun.  So I yanked them off about 30 mins ago!! :)  Now I gotta get me a scope setup.  Looking at a shotgun scope more than likely, but I have say a 2x Red Dot would be useful on this gun too.  Just wouldn't be crazy about the looks of that sight on the gun.

You could "load it down" for comfort and still dump a hog easily..
