338 BAR Does Moose Dirty!
« on: October 19, 2003, 04:30:45 AM »
Yes Sir, done er in, well after a fashion.  Lit this moose up at about 60 yards after a wicked stalk through a muskeg bog.  The moose takes the hit.....and RUNS right at the Coug!  Not good.  Emptied the gun, 4th shot it dives, just about 15 yards from where I'm standing.

First shot was a picture perfect lung shot, and according to Ina, it was a killing shot as she said the moose was quivering and running on an angle. Me I didn't see any of that, just knew the moose was still up on its feet.  So the second shot I took out a shoulder, still not down. Slammed er again going for the heart. Nope.  One left, high lung shot just under the spine.  Yup, that done it.

Bout a half hour later we hear two BAR's empty 10 shots way off in the distance. Man them moose just don't wanna quit.  We seen a LOT of hunters, and to the man, they were all luggin BAR rifles.

Truth be told, I'd never have got 4 shots into that moose with anything else, just to damn fast the action.  Howsomever, just slappin that trigger is some effective

Well, you certainly got your money's worth. Congratulations. I was charged by a moose while bear hunting in Maine in the early 1970s. Had to shoot over the animal to drive it off. Kind of big up close and moving towards you, eh? Shot a couple legal moose in Canada. Lots of work in getting the carcass to the freezer. Please let us know about the bullets you recover. Wish they made the BAR in a .375 or larger caliber.  Semi can be a life saver.

Targ

I used Winchester 200 grain CXP3 factory ammo.  Ammo shot REAL good.  Of 4 shots, 3 went right through leaving a 3 inch hole on the offside.  The one that I broke the on shoulder with went through and I found it under the hide on the off side.

That bullet was picture perfect, beautiful mushroom, no core separation, EXACTLY what I like in a game bullet.

Winchester and Browning both get two thumbs up from this hunt
